We hope today on "International Picnic Day" ๐Ÿ‰ that other places in the world are having much better picnic weather than Vermont! ๐ŸŒงโ˜” Today is one of those ones where sipping coffee all day just makes sense.... and we're very excited to make that easier now that Tall Cat Coffee Roasters is on the VFFC Online Market! โ˜•

Tall Cat Coffee Roasters is a boutique, single-origin coffee roaster located in historic Dorset, Vermont. ๐Ÿˆ This week on the market they have 8 varieties/roasts to choose from! In their own words:

"As Vermonters and former farmers, we believe in the importance of Farm-to-Table, and knowing where our food comes from. This is why Tall Cat Coffee Roasters is committed to sourcing Farm-to-Cup coffees. We choose fair-trade, ethically, and environmentally sourced beans whenever possible because we want to support small farmers and the communities in which they work across the globe. We believe that a great cup of coffee should make the world a better place."

๐ŸŒฑ Building Whatโ€™s Next While Honoring Our Roots ๐ŸŒฑ

It has been bittersweet watching Old Blue come down this week, and over the coming weeks weโ€™ll share some of the relics and stories uncovered along the way.๐Ÿ“–

This decision has not come easily. But growth sometimes means making space for what comes next while carrying forward what matters most. We are grateful to share that the Greta mural has been carefully saved and relocated so this piece of our story continues with us.

What has made this moment especially meaningful is the incredible community support surrounding it. Local contractors are generously donating time, equipment, and services to help with the demolitionโ€”a modern-day community barn raisingโ€ฆ or perhaps in this case, a community barn razing.

As we look ahead, we pause to honor a meaningful part of our past. ๐Ÿ’™

Through a phased approach to redesign and investment, this next chapter at VFFC will expand and strengthen three core areas of our work:
๐Ÿšœ Aggregation โ€” building infrastructure to move local food more efficiently
๐Ÿค Convening โ€” creating spaces for learning, gathering, and connection
๐Ÿฅ• Access โ€” expanding inclusive programs and food distribution opportunities

Vermont Farmers Food Centerโ€™s new Campus Masterplan represents a long-term vision for our 2.7-acre site and our evolving role as an agricultural switchboard for the regionโ€”strengthening the connections between local food, community, and access.

This is the first week our meat chickens were moved from their brooder to their portable chicken coop. They are learning quickly how to maneuver the steep ramp in and out of the coop and their natural instincts are wonderful to watch- like run away from the crows, eat the delicious clover and enjoy dust baths.

Saying Bye to Old Blue๐Ÿ’™

While summer construction season is underway, and our campus is fully activated as the next phases of VFFC's redevelopment project move forward, the biggest update we have to share is that it is time to say goodbye to "Old Blue" the historic Blue Building on our campus, originally built in the 1860s.

When VFFC began this phase of our campus redevelopment journey in 2021, our vision was to rehabilitate the Blue Building and transform it into a shared use commercial kitchen with processing and climate controlled storage space. While years of environmental assessment and remediation work focused our attention on the Green Building, Old Blue waited patiently for its turn.

Over the past year, VFFC board explored alternatives and creative solutions for preserving Old Blue, but ultimately, the decision was made to redirect resources toward renovating the Green Building as the cost and timeline required to rehabilitate Old Blue had grown far beyond what was financially feasible for our organization.

While this decision has not come easily, we are reminded that sometimes new growth requires letting go of what came before. After standing watch over our community for more than 160 years, this week we say goodbye to Old Blue.

Do you have a story or memory of Old Blue?

If you have memories, photos, or stories connected to Old Blue, we'd love to hear them. Join the conversation here and help us celebrate the history of this beloved building as we prepare for the future.
