Christy Houser, Owner of Mill Hill General Store & President of Rutherford Town Rising
In this installment of MyRutherfordton: My Story, we’re proud to spotlight a local entrepreneur and community leader who is helping shape the energy and identity of downtown Rutherfordton: Christy Houser, owner of Mill Hill General Store and President of the Board at Rutherford Town Rising.
Christy has always dreamed of running a general store, a vision that came to life when she and her family began rehabbing a historic building on Main Street. “As I was researching what Rutherfordton needed and what would be a good fit, I decided to give the general store a try. Now, we’ve been open for two years!” Operating a small business in Rutherfordton comes with its challenges, but Christy emphasizes the rewards. “Having a community that wants you to succeed, being near family and friends, and being a part of something that is growing, it’s an amazing feeling.”
As President of Rutherford Town Rising, Christy has a front-row seat to the downtown revitalization efforts. “I love the atmosphere here the originality and the pride that business owners, residents, and town staff show. RTR is building momentum again, and it’s exciting to see people ‘buy in’ to the idea that Rutherfordton is growing and evolving, while still holding onto its core values: community, history, and positive growth.” Among her favorite local traditions? “Definitely the Christmas lights above Main Street and now the lights along the Purple Martin Greenway. I love Christmastime, the decorated shop windows, the festive atmosphere. One of my favorite places in town is Main Street Park. I get to overlook it every day, and I love watching people enjoy that space.”
Christy’s investment in Rutherfordton goes far beyond her business. She serves on several town boards and committees and finds joy in watching the town’s continued growth. “This may be a small community, but it’s a gathering place for good people from all walks of life. I want to be a part of what comes next I don’t want to miss a thing.”
Her message to anyone thinking about starting something new in Rutherfordton is simple and inspiring:
“Rutherfordton is a welcoming town that values both tradition and fresh ideas. Our business community is incredibly supportive owners know each other, collaborate, and cheer each other on. That’s something special, and I’m proud to be part of it.”
