Spotlight time!
In 2007, at 30 years old, Doug McPherson found himself laid off from the only industry he had ever known. A friend offered him a job at Hwy 55—then just a $6.15-an-hour “until you find something else” opportunity. He never imagined it would become the foundation of his life.

Doug poured himself into learning the business, traveling across Eastern North Carolina to help struggling locations and soaking up wisdom from the people who built Hwy 55. Eventually, he took over the Tarboro location, turning a store doing barely $3,000 a week into a consistent, million-dollar-a-year business.

In 2013, that opportunity became something more: Kenney Moore made good on his promise and sold Doug the Tarboro store through in-house financing. Through hard work and determination, Doug paid the store off quickly.

Today, Tarboro is more than a restaurant. It’s Doug’s home, a place where he has invested countless hours, built lasting relationships, and served generations of neighbors.

Doug says it best: “God had another plan.” And what began as a job became a dream, a business, and a blessing.

Spotlight time!

Some journeys begin with a dream. Derek Andrews' began with a part-time job at 15 years old in the original Leland Hwy 55 in 2005. What started as a way to earn a paycheck became a lifelong passion for serving people and building community.

As Hwy 55 expanded, Derek grew alongside it, helping support locations throughout southeastern North Carolina and South Carolina before taking over operations in Surf City in 2012. His dedication eventually led him to own multiple restaurants, including Leland 2 and Surf City, while even bringing the Hwy 55 experience beyond the dining room through the Hwy 55 Food Truck.

Along the way, Hwy 55 became more than a career—it became the foundation for a life. Derek married his wife, Stacy, in 2022, welcomed their first child in 2024, and is now preparing to welcome their second. His story reflects what makes Hwy 55 special: the opportunity to grow, invest in your community, and build a legacy rooted in hard work, relationships, and serving others.

Owner's Spotlight:
Ryan Clark, owner of Hwy 55 in Oxford, is living proof that opportunity can change a life. He started with the company earning $7.25 an hour and, through hard work, faith, and the support of Hwy 55, achieved his dream of business ownership. Today, Ryan and his wife are raising three children, including two with autism, and he credits God and Hwy 55 for the many blessings his family has experienced.

For Ryan, the heart of Hwy 55 is its people. He believes every guest is a neighbor, and every interaction is an opportunity to make someone feel seen, valued, and cared for. Whether it's learning a guest's story, serving a great meal, or simply offering a warm smile, Ryan and his team strive to leave a lasting impact. He believes Hwy 55's culture is unlike any other because it genuinely cares, does things right, and makes things right when needed. Ryan's story is a reminder that dreams really can come true—and he's excited to help others experience that same opportunity.
