On January 31st of 1961, ten gentlemen made the mile long walk from Friendship College to hold a sit-in at McCrory’s lunch counter in downtown Rock Hill. They were refused service, arrested, and nine taken to jail, subsequently serving 30 days of hard labor. This sparked the strategy behind the “Jail, No Bail” movement.
Now, we honor the 65th anniversary of the Friendship 9 sit-in.🤍
We honor each of these gentlemen, as well as their supporters, including the City Girls, and the significance of their bravery in our daily operations. Each member of the Friendship 9 is recognized by an engraved wooden plaque adorning our walls, as well as on the original counter stools with existing name plates.

Over the past six years, we have had the honor of sharing the story of the Friendship 9 with countless guests, folks passing by, news outlets, school groups, non-profits, news outlets, and even folks across the world via the internet! Please take a moment to swipe through some of our favorite memories with the Friendship 9 that we’ve had the great fortune to meet!
Our hope is to continue the conversation surrounding the Friendship 9, and our team is honored just to simply work in the space where this historical event took place 65 years ago. Thank you, Friendship 9, we love you - and we will continue to share your legacy with those who walk through our doors.
It’s just as important now as it’s ever been to remember - “hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”🤍
