In July my daughter came to visit and check out the operation. Then in August we extracted an additional 165 pounds of honey from the two strongest hives. It was a lot of work and the bees were a lot more interested in what we were doing this time which made things all the more difficult. We still left a significant amount of honey for the bees to get them through the winter.

On July 27th my neighbors hive was attacked by a bear. I purchased the hive and we moved it to a more secure location in my apiary area. We later discovered that the queen had been killed or left after the attack so a new queen was installed. Now we are up to five hives. I am hoping that will be all until next year. Need to try to get them through winter safely which is easier said than done.

By the end of May the two hives we had were getting so full we decided to split them both. We established two new hives with a new queen in each. Four hives now.
