Last month, we paused Salty’s operations to support victims of Hurricane Helen. While most organizations in Asheville, NC, suggested sending money due to the overwhelming need, we wanted to be hands-on. After persistent outreach, a small town near Boone, NC, called Banner Elk welcomed us with open arms. The town's gratitude was humbling—we served the entire community with the help of volunteers, including VT football players and . The town even provided accommodations, introduced us to their donation center, and shared their history.
We met a couple in their 70s, living without electricity or water, like most of the town. Despite everyones circumstances, they showed incredible resilience, which moved us deeply. This experience reminded us that while earnings sustain our business, a greater purpose defines it.
I didn't tell anyone my plan, but we wanted to leave behind a makeshift kitchen of flat tops, brand new smoker/grill, 15 propane tanks, and kitchen equipment for the town to use, making it easier for others to step in and help. All of the country wanted to help, but not everyone has the bandwidth or resources to do so. By lowering the level of entry we hope that others will come and cook. Moved by the whole process we’re launching Your Community Kitchen, a mobile resource to assist communities in distress. Though in its early stages, we hope it will empower others to make a difference when disaster strikes. When areas are hit like this, they have local talent that are sitting idle, through the greater community, I feel we can make a difference our children can be proud of.
The winter will be harder than ever for most here, but I want them to know, as a human being, we feel for them and are in this together.
