Well said Abby!
It's easy to be on the outside looking in and think you understand the backend of the business. Logistics are why we are only open 2 days a week,. It's what works for our business and family right now. And sometimes, even those two days don't bring in enough to cover overhead and payroll.
We love our customers and are blessed to be here. But if you want to understand the nitty gritty, please read this post.
Bravo The Boardwalk Baker for being transparent and loving at the same time.
Really transparent post ahead.
At the beginning of this year, we started opening on Saturdays because we heard the same thing over and over:
“I wish you were open Saturdays.”
“Saturday is the only day I can come.”
“I’d shop more if you were open on the weekend.”
So… we listened.
Because when you own a small business, you’re constantly trying to figure out how to better serve your customers AND keep the doors open. If people tell you they want another day to shop, you add the day. You staff it. You prep for it. You turn the lights on and hope they come.
But the unfortunate reality? A lot of those people seem to have vanished.
And I don’t say that to guilt anyone into shopping with us. Life is busy. Money is tight. Plans change. We completely understand that.
But I think sometimes there’s a disconnect between asking a small business to offer something and what it actually takes for that business to continue offering it.
Opening an additional day isn’t just flipping the OPEN sign.
It’s payroll.
It’s utilities.
It’s ingredients.
It’s hours of prep.
It’s product we have to make before knowing if anyone will walk through the door.
And it’s another day that our small team gives to this business.
We started Saturdays because our customers asked for them, and we genuinely wanted to make The Boardwalk Baker more accessible.
But for something to stay, it eventually has to make sense for the business, too.
So this is simply your transparent reminder: if there’s something you love that a small business offers, a certain day, extended hours, an event, a menu item, whatever it may be, supporting it is what keeps it around.
Requests tell us what you want. Your support tells us what we can keep.
We’re still figuring out what Saturdays look like for us, but as always, I’d rather bring you along for the honest parts of owning a small business than pretend every decision works perfectly.
