What Veterans Day means to Me... Now.
The end of my senior year at Reedsport High School found me headed for the Navy's nuclear submarine program... until an over achiever recruiter pushed me so hard that I ended up going the other way. While I have often wondered who/where I'd be if I had stayed that course, I have never regretted it. I am who, and where I was meant to be.
My Dad served... that is what led me to consider doing so. At the time I knew that my Uncle's had served, but I did not understand what it meant. I looked at it as a job, I had no patriotism or love for my country that led me to give up everything I knew, to jump into a fight I did not start.
About 15 years ago my Mom shared this picture and article about her brothers... it brought light to the fact that it was a sacrifice. Not only for each and every one of them, but for their parents, spouses and siblings. I can not imagine being in any of their shoes.
It gave new meaning to being a Veteran, and to Veterans Day. Today, I have a better understanding of what they all went through and the sacrifices they gave so that I can sit at my desk and type this, while drinking coffee and looking at the river. Coulda been different for all of us.
Today, on Veterans Day we give thanks to all of them through the years, and also the ones that continue to put their lives aside to serve today. They deserve far more credit than they have gotten, or that we could ever give them. They did not just give up part of their life for us, they gave all of their lives for us. The things they went through and live/lived with because of it is often not fully understood.
While I did not "know" most of my Uncles personally I did know my Uncle Floyd, he was a Golden Gloves Boxer when he went in, and could only walk with a cane when he got out. It changed him and drove him to a life that he never recovered from. He lived here in Reedsport till he passed. I sure did not understand what he went through at the time. I do now. He deserved better, and he for sure deserves to be remembered for his service.
Thank You ALL!
Mike
