❤️ THE STORY BEHIND PENNY’S PIT. FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS ❤️
I think it’s time we share a little more of our story, because sometimes people see a business from the outside without ever really knowing the people behind it.
My husband and I started Penny’s Pit in 2013. For eight years, it was just the two of us. No big team, no large staff to rely on. Just two people with a dream, working side by side, putting everything we had into building something of our own.
We built Penny’s Pit one day at a time, one customer at a time, one burger at a time. Over the years, we were fortunate enough to build an incredible following of people who loved our food, our service, and what we created. We are so proud of that, and we will never take it for granted.
In 2021, we started our family, and life changed. We began hiring kitchen staff because we knew we couldn't continue doing everything ourselves and maintain the hours our customers deserved. But that brought an entirely new set of challenges. Finding dependable, quality employees, managing payroll and overhead, keeping up with the rising cost of food, and maintaining the consistency our customers expect became increasingly difficult.
What many people don't realize is that when you own a small business with your spouse, you don't just go to work and come home. Your business is always there. It's the early mornings, late nights, bills, ordering, scheduling, fixing problems, covering shifts, and worrying about everything that needs to get done tomorrow. It's making sacrifices that most people never see, because at the end of the day, the responsibility falls on you. While we were trying to keep Penny's Pit going, we also became shareholders in Dashco next door and took on the responsibility of managing the store full-time. Suddenly, we had even more on our plates, along with a growing family and two businesses that required so much of us.
In May 2026, we made the difficult decision to close Penny's Pit. We honestly intended to walk away. We were overwhelmed, exhausted, and felt it was time to close that chapter of our lives. It wasn't because we stopped loving what we had built. It was because sometimes loving something isn't enough to make the demands of running it sustainable.
But then something happened that we didn't expect.
We started seeing your comments on social media about how much you missed us. We ran into people out in public who recognized us and stopped to tell us how much they missed Penny's Pit. People shared memories, talked about their favorite food, and reminded us that what we had built over all those years meant something to them.
And honestly, that got to us. ❤️
It reminded us that Penny's Pit was about more than burgers and fries. It was about the people who walked through our doors, the relationships we built, and a community that had become part of our story.
That's a big part of why we decided to reopen.
But I also want people to understand something. Behind Penny's Pit are two real people who have worked incredibly hard for more than 13 years. We are business owners, but we're also a husband and wife, parents, and human beings who get tired, feel overwhelmed, and sometimes have to make difficult decisions about what we can realistically handle.
We don't share this for sympathy. We share it because small businesses don't run themselves. They are built on years of hard work, sacrifice, risk, and a whole lot of heart. And when you're a small, family owned business, every decision carries a weight that isn't always visible to the customer.
We are so grateful for everyone who has supported Penny's Pit since 2013, for those who continued to speak up for us after we closed, and for those who have welcomed us back. You reminded us that what we built matters.
We can't promise that running this business will always be easy, and we can't pretend that the challenges have disappeared. But we can promise that the heart behind Penny's Pit is still here.
From two people with a dream in 2013, to a family trying to balance business and life today, thank you for being part of our journey.
We aren't just Penny's Pit owners. We're the husband and wife who have poured a huge part of our lives into this place. We hope that, moving forward, you'll see a little more of the people behind the food.
With love and gratitude,
The family behind Penny's Pit ❤️
