A simple request today got me thinking.

I met Neha at Mylapore Westgate, and she was a little hesitant before asking me:

“Can you offer a vegan thali?”

The question is actually simpler to solve than it sounds.

Most of our thali is already vegan. The two items that make it non-vegan are curd rice and dessert.

And we are already working on it.

Anu Ganesh is visiting from Atlanta, and today we are going to experiment with soy yogurt served in individual katoris as an alternative for curd rice.

Next challenge: a delicious vegan dessert that truly belongs on a South Indian thali.

This is how change often begins at Mylapore — not in a conference room, but through a conversation with a customer.

Someone asked me yesterday, “What makes Mylapore different?”

This message I received this morning probably answers that question better than I ever could.

A family was returning home with two little children. They needed our Welcome Back Home Package, and they needed it quickly. Within a few hours, we were able to put everything together for them.

But what touched me most was not that they loved the food.

It was this:

“The groceries that were included actually helped us to settle down with two little kids, instead of doing a grocery run.”

That is exactly why we created this service.

We are not just thinking about what someone will eat for lunch or dinner. We are thinking about what they may be going through at that moment.

Returning from a long trip. Moving into a new home. Caring for elderly parents. Welcoming a new baby. Recovering from an illness. Dealing with an unexpected family situation.

Sometimes food is not just food.

It is one less thing to worry about.

That, perhaps, is what makes us different.

We try to see the person and the situation behind every order—and ask ourselves:

“What else can we do to make their day a little easier?”

Hameed in our Fremont Idly Express location is “customer obsessed”. He is kind, courteous, patiently listens to customer needs, empathetic and I can keep going on and on. Here is a note I just received :

Hi Jayaraman Sir, hope you are doing good.
This Sunday we had my mom’s 80th birthday celebration and wanted to do it with her friends and family - so restrictions like no onion, no garlic and vegan options et al. Hameed Sir took care of it all very well and the whole crowd was extremely happy and content.
Wanted to thank you for setting up a beautiful team that is always customer focused !

Yesterday afternoon, I received a call.

A family was dealing with a medical emergency and needed help with food. I told them one thing: “Please don’t worry about the food. We’ll take care of it.”

I immediately reached out to Anu Ganesh in Atlanta and asked her to connect with the family and find out what they needed. She sprang into action, and an hour ago, the food was delivered.

Life can change without warning. In moments like these, even something as simple as knowing that a meal is taken care of can make a difference.

Today, I feel blessed to have 14 kitchens, an incredible team, and, most importantly, a generous heart with which to serve.

For us, hospitality goes beyond serving food across a counter. Empathy is at the heart of what we do.
