Morocco was the first country in the world to recognize the independence of the US.
In 1777, Morocco became the first country to publicly recognize the independence of the United States. Sultan Mohammed ben Abdallah opened Moroccan ports to American ships while the Revolutionary War was still underway, signaling recognition of the new nation.
That relationship was later formalized with the Moroccan–American Treaty of Friendship, signed in 1786 and ratified in 1787. It is widely regarded as the oldest unbroken treaty relationship in U.S. history that is still in force today.
