One of my sons had a doctor’s appointment in Phoenix a few weeks ago, and whenever we’re making the trip down to the Valley, we’re always looking for an excuse to discover a new local coffee roaster or shop.
This trip led us to , where I had the opportunity to spend some time with Ron, owner and operator of Cortez Coffee.
As a coffee roaster, one of my favorite parts of this journey is meeting others who have dedicated their lives to coffee. Ron not only roasts coffee here in Arizona, but also maintains deep ties to Costa Rica through an eco-tourism coffee farm that he is part owner of. It was fascinating to hear about coffee from both the roasting side and the farming side of the industry.
We spent time talking coffee origins, roasting, sourcing, sustainability, and the many paths that bring a coffee bean from a mountainside in Costa Rica to a cup here in Arizona. Conversations like these remind me how much there is still to learn and how fortunate we are to be part of such a welcoming coffee community.
Thank you, Ron, for the hospitality, the great conversation, and the excellent coffee. Every stop like this helps make me a better roaster and deepens my appreciation for the people behind every cup.
If you’re in the Phoenix area, be sure to check out and support a local coffee business with roots that reach all the way back to Costa Rica.
