🏆🙏🏾 WHAT A JOURNEY — AND WHAT A BLESSING! 🙏🏾

First and foremost, I thank God for the gifts, talents, knowledge, strength, and opportunities He has blessed me with throughout my life. For more than 20 years, I’ve dedicated my life to the culinary and hospitality industry—creating, cooking, teaching, leading, and serving others through food.

By the grace of God, I am now competing in the MAXIM Chef Competition 2026–2027, and I honestly never imagined I would make it this far.

I started at #17 in the Top 25, climbed to #2, then #1, and held #1 through the Top 20 and Top 15. Now, in Round 3 — Top 10, I’ve gone from #1 to 2, back to 1, and now back to 2.

🙏🏾 To my family, friends, fans, followers, and everyone who has prayed for me, encouraged me, shared my journey, and voted for me—THANK YOU! Your love and support mean more than words can express.

This journey represents faith, resilience, purpose, passion, and a new beginning. God has brought me this far, and I know He’s not finished with me yet.

From 17 to 2 to 1—and now fighting in the Top 10!

🏆🙏🏾 LOOK HOW FAR WE’VE COME!

The journey isn’t over.

Many know me as Chef Marcus Efford. After years of culinary education, certifications, degrees, and professional experience, I paused my career 2½ years ago after seeing the growing need among our unhoused neighbors in Montclair. I felt called by God to serve, and I said yes. I’m private, and much of this work has been done quietly, from my heart and passion—not for recognition.

As a Montclair Township Advocate for the Unhoused Community, I volunteer through the Salvation Army, REACH OUT MONTCLAIR, MESH, Montclair Library, creating menus, cooking meals, and helping with casework, IDs, documents, shelters, housing programs, vouchers, and resources. This is personal because I’ve experienced homelessness and housing insecurity myself. My great-grandmother, Christine Lucinda Reynolds, taught me, “If I be kind and good on earth, heaven will always be mine.” I carry those words while working toward my mission to help end hunger and homelessness.

That is why Khaliq Elliott’s fight against leukemia is personal. Khaliq and his brother, Joseph, are facing housing, medical, and basic needs challenges. If you can, please visit the GoFundMe through my social media, donate or share, and keep them in your prayers. I never want anyone to feel overwhelmed or feel I’m asking for too much—every donation, share, prayer, encouragement, and act of kindness means something to me.

Thank you to everyone supporting me in my culinary competition. I’m currently in first place in this round, and I’m grateful for every vote and every person who believes in me. To those on my private personal page, your presence means even more because I don’t share everything with everyone; I trust and value you. I’m not here to save the world—that’s God’s job. I’m simply saying yes to the work He puts before me and helping the people He places in my path. God bless you all. ❤️🙏🏽

Title:The Ice Cream Scoop

Born: 1866 in Kenbridge, VA
Alfred Cralle was born in Virginia shortly after the Civil War ended. A businessman and inventor, Alfred Cralle discovered his interest in mechanics at an early age. First, he attended a school set up by the Baptist Home Mission Society for newly freed African Americans. After graduating, he settled down in Pittsburgh, PA and made history.
While working in a hotel, he observed people constantly struggling to dish out ice cream with a spoon. Basically, ice cream would stick to the spoon or ladles used by servers. Moreover, this method required servers to use two hands. Cralle intuitively knew this inconvenient and slow process could be improved upon with some simple ingenuity. And he set out to do just that.
In 1897, Alfred Cralle received patent #576395 for his original design called the Ice Cream Mold and Dished or what we’ve come to know as an ice cream scoop. His simple, yet ingenious mechanical feat solved the problems servers encountered while working with ice cream. Chiefly, his ice cream scoop included a built-in scraper, required one hand to operate, and ice cream did not stick to the metal.
Cralle’s winning equation of durability, ease of operation, effectiveness, and affordability was a winner. Moreover, his scoop required little to no maintenance: there were no delicate parts that were prone to malfunctioning or breaking. Consequently, he invented a perfect instrument that others have failed to improve upon in the 125 years since its inception. This perfect design in still used in homes and restaurants today, making it easier to dish up one of everyone’s favorite treat.

Title: Food Preservatives

Lloyd Augustus Hall: A true food preservation pioneer, Lloyd Augustus Hall is responsible for inventing many chemical preservation techniques that are still in use today. Born near Chicago in 1894, Hall earned more than 100 U.S. and foreign patents in food chemistry throughout his illustrious career.  Most notably, Hall successfully discovered a method to combine sodium chloride with tiny crystals of sodium nitrate and nitrite to prevent food from spoiling. He later used chemicals like lecithin to develop antioxidants, which prevented fats and oils in foods from reacting with oxygen and spoiling. He also invented a way to use ethylene oxide gas in a vacuum chamber to purify foods of microbes such as bacteria and molds that cause spoilage. One of America’s top food chemists, Hall is a member of the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
