Introducing Tandem x Kamavindi Coffee Labs! This new partnership highlights coffees sourced from across Kenya through our collaboration with Peter Mbature, his family, and their exporting company, Kamavindi Coffee Lab. Working with Kamavindi Coffee Lab has connected us with a number of extraordinary Kenyan producers whose coffees and stories we are excited to share throughout the summer. We hope these offerings represent only the beginning of our work with Kamavindi and look forward to deepening our partnership with Peter and his family in the years and harvests to come.
Kambarare — Kirinyaga, Kenya
WE HEAR: Mango Nectar, Tart Cherry, Tangerine, Solar
Gerald Njagi is a third-generation producer whose farm, Kambarare, has produced some of the most memorable microlots from Kenya in recent years. We’re thrilled to be roasting his coffee for the first time. Gerald started Kambarare in 2011 by leasing 100 trees, and today has more than 1,000 planted across his family’s land. He is an exceptionally devoted and meticulous producer with a particular passion for processing. Gerald began processing this SL-28 separation by picking only ripe red cherries, which were then hand-sorted and floated to remove defects. After de-pulping, the parchment was fermented for 36 hours in plastic barrels in a cool, dark place, then washed and sorted again before being finished on raised drying beds for 14–21 days. This particular lot is juicy and densely fruited, with tropical nectar sweetness, mouthwatering acidity, and flavors of tart red fruit and fresh citrus.
Kamavindi — Embu, Kenya
We Hear: Grapefruit, Redcurrant, Juniper, Forever In My Life
We are thrilled and honored to present this SL separation from Peter Mbature, the Mbature family, and Kamavindi Estate, their family farm in Embu. Kamavindi was founded in 1958, when Peter’s father, John Mbature, planted 100 trees, the maximum allowance for local Kenyans under colonial law. After Kenyan independence a few years later, Kamavindi began increasing its production, and today the farm has more than 10,000 trees. The family has also expanded its operations to include a washing station, an education and training center, and an
