Friends,

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of our friend and manager of our Fremont location, Mason Allen.

Mason was a kind, dedicated, and genuinely caring person who made a lasting impression on our team and on so many of the customers and friends who had the opportunity to know him. He brought warmth, compassion, and enthusiasm to our coffee family, and he will be deeply missed.

Our hearts are with Mason's spouse, mother, family, friends, and everyone whose lives were touched by him during this incredibly difficult time.

Mason's family has created a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses, rent, moving costs, and other immediate needs as they navigate this unimaginable loss. If you are able, please consider making a donation or sharing the fundraiser to help ease some of the burden they are facing.

Every act of kindness, no matter the size, is deeply appreciated.

Please keep Mason's loved ones in your thoughts as they grieve.

Dear friends

After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to close Jim & Patty's Coffee.
Our final day of business will be Sunday, July 12th.

To everyone who has walked through our doors over the years, we sincerely thank you. We are incredibly grateful for your support. It has been an honor to carry Jim and Patty's legacy and to serve our beloved community.

While this chapter is coming to a close, some of the favorites you've come to know will still be available at Spielman Bagels & Coffee; For the time being, Black Tiger beans, Black Tiger Shakes, and Pig Newtons will be available at the Spielman Cafe in Forest Heights, and Pig Newtons will also be available at the Spielman’s location in Beaverton. We hope to expand those offerings to additional Spielman locations in the future.

As for the Jim & Patty's space at 4951 NE Fremont, we don't yet know what the future holds. It's possible it may become another location for Spielman Bagels. We appreciate everyone's patience as plans continue to develop.

Thank you so much for allowing us to be a small part of your lives and your daily routines. We hope you'll stop by before this Sunday and share one last cup with us.

Today would have been Jim Roberts' 77th birthday.

Long before Portland became known for its coffee culture, Jim was already sharing his passion for fresh-roasted coffee with anyone willing to a talk with him about it- beans, brewing... or just life in general. To many people, he wasn't just a coffee shop owner. He was a visionary.. a friend, a mentor, a storyteller, a poet.. and role model.

The values that built Jim & Patty's Coffee were never just about coffee. They were about community, curiosity, and making people feel welcome like they were guests in his own home. Those values continue to guide us today.

If you ever shared a conversation with Jim, worked alongside him, learned from him, or simply enjoyed a cup of coffee with him, we'd love to hear your memories in the comments.

Happy heavenly Birthday, Jim. We're raising our mugs to you. You are deeply missed. We're proud to carry on your legacy in every cup we serve ❤️☕

Half a century ago, in 1976.. Our company's founders were already planting the seeds of the Portland coffee craze that would follow years later.

Back then, if you were looking for some good fresh roasted coffee.. everyone in northwest Portland knew to go see Jim. He was "that Coffee Man". -With the aptly named coffee shop near Everett & Westover. Also, (if she wasn't busy upstairs watching over the kiddos) you'd see Patty there too helping Jim run the shop.

They were your friendly neighborhood Coffee People. -Selling fresh roasted coffee beans, brewing hardware and these wild, exotic drinks from Italy that hardly anyone in Portland had ever heard of called "lattes" and "cappuccinos".

Few could have imagined that this humble, friendly couple with these unique drink ideas would go on to ignite a coffee revolution that would transform Portland's identity for generations to come.

Fifty years later, we're still proud to carry forward the legacy that Jim and Patty started all those years ago in northwest Portland.
