Raised above his family’s Chicago bakery, Andrea Spella began drinking espresso when he was old enough to raise a cup to his lips. For quality and consistency, this Portland, Oregon roaster develops deep relationships with coffee growers and roasts the beans himself, always aiming for the “sweet spot.” Somewhere between a light and dark roast, his beans boast a balance of sweet and bitter with a d

GUATEMALA MONJA BLANCA IS BACK Monday 8/31 online 10am and retail beans available at our flagship caffè!! It will also be on our drip rotation.

A favored everyday brew, in the cup, we find notes of Italian plum, Marzipan, and Cocoa! ☕️

The story of Monja Blanca is filled with community collaboration. The coffee is produced by smallholder farms throughout the Atitlán region growing traditional Guatemalan coffee. What reaches your cup, then, is more than a collection of beans. It is the result of many hands and many farms from the hills around Lake Atitlán that rest in a highland basin surrounded by volcanic peaks. It is a regional portrait assembled one harvest at a time.

We especially love it prepared as a pour over, Moka Pot, or French Press. However you brew it, we hope you take a moment to let the coffee tell you where it comes from. Happiest of birthdays to one of our lovely customers, Mr Spicer! Spicer comes in for straight espresso several times a day, and has maintained a positive personal rapport with all of our baristas individually for many many months. It’s unanimous, we appreciate his ongoing presence in the shop, and in our lives! He genuinely greets every regular and traveler who walks in the door while he savors an espresso and hits the road with a smile—his head always lifted higher after his brief moment of bliss! Thanks for offering a warm welcome to everyone, Sam, that’s what makes you feel like a part of the Spella family. ☕️🫶🏼

Our little crew received lovely handmade ceramic mugs today from our friend Stephanie Oliver over at Stephanie Oliver ✨We hope you check out her work, and support this incredible local artisan as she continues to grow her small business. Stephanie makes endless varieties of custom designed functional, everyday use pottery. She is full of creative talent and also an incredible therapist over at Stephanie Oliver ! Last night we did a crew outing to Pizzeria Otto and the newly opened Otto Gelato in Lake Oswego off Mercantile Drive! The pizza was other worldly… gorgeous wood fired packed full of flavor (and we forgot to take a photo of how stunning they were)!! We all have different dietary needs and we all found something we loved! Next door the gelato and espresso was absolutely superb. 5 stars! The Hugo Spritz flavor was next level! Thanks for having us Otto crew🫶🏼

We’ve got some Spella Anniversaries happening this week starting with DS on 8/9! 🫶🏼☕️✨

Since I (DS) manage our communications and crew operations, I’ll start this anniversary week by sharing what this place (and people) have meant to me. I met Andrea shortly after he opened his iconic coffee cart on 9th and Alder nearly 20 years ago. Like many of us, I fell in love with his coffee and warm hospitality immediately, and quickly fancied myself a Spella groupie. I never would have imagined so many years later I’d be neck deep slowly learning every little part of this business. This is an incredibly unique and special place, not just because the espresso is exquisite but because you can feel the true warmth and welcome long after you’ve finished your coffee. It’s an experience and a soul-filling connection with other humans that feel like family from the first sip they serve you. The joy and camaraderie with our crew and customers makes this not just a job but a place of purpose, acceptance, generosity, and growth. Cheers Spella! Thanks for many wonderful years of friendship and benefits! 🤣☺️

There’s a quiet truth about genuine hospitality that we don’t talk about enough.

People often see this work as an art or a science. The craftsmanship. The presentation. The beautiful details. The precision. The long hours. The numbers. The atmosphere we create.

But true hospitality lives much deeper than that.

Service is a mirror. It reflects back our authenticity, our awareness, and our willingness to accept both ourselves and others. It gently strips away ego, challenges the masks we think we need to wear, and asks us to communicate with intention and care.

It teaches discipline when no one is watching. It reveals exhaustion, burnout, and every shortcut we’re tempted to take. It opens our hearts—and sometimes breaks them in ways we never expect.

Yet if we stay curious, compassionate, and committed to growing, something beautiful happens. The grace we learn to offer ourselves becomes the same grace we extend to every guest who walks through our doors.
