Inspired by the perfumers of Paris and the fine chocolatiers of Provence, teamaker Steve Smith has once again picked up his tasting spoon — a big-bellied, sterling silver antique found in a stall in Tinsukia, India. Joined by trusted cohorts from his previous tea adventures, such as Tazo, he lovingly crafts each small batch of Smith in his Teaworks atelier.

Introducing the Darjeeling Collection.

Three teas, one story. Our 2026 Bungalow Release sits alongside our First and Second Flush Darjeelings, a collection built to show how one origin can taste so different depending on when the leaves are plucked.

First Flush brings bright, floral notes from spring’s earliest harvest. Second Flush deepens into something richer and more full-bodied. Bungalow blends both flushes into a single, complex cup, a rare chance to taste how the seasons complement each other.

$5 from every tin or tip top sold goes to Broadleaf, supporting the farmers and communities behind the tea we love.

Find the collection in stores or online while it lasts.

In the 1970s, Steve Smith was working at a natural food store in NW Portland when he noticed something odd: the peppermint grown in Oregon and Washington was incredibly delicious, yet nearly all of it was being distilled into oil for gum and toothpaste. None was being grown for tea.

So he drove out to a mint coalition in Eastern Oregon and asked if any farmers would be willing to grow mint for leaf instead of oil. That one question from our founder, and the adventurous farmers who said yes, helped bring Pacific Northwest peppermint into tea production for the first time.

Decades later, we’re still proud to work with many of those same farmers to bring Pacific Northwest peppermint from their fields to your cup. Swipe through for the full story.

The window for cutting peppermint is measured in hours, not days. Peppermint farmer, Steve, walks the fields checking moisture again and again, waiting for the exact moment the leaf is ready. Once it hits, everything stops and every combine runs.

It is the Pacific Northwest climate that makes this crop what it is. Warm days and cool mornings stress the plant, and that stress changes the compounds in the essential oil, giving it the pungent, cooling menthol you cannot find anywhere else.

As farmer Steve would say, it all starts with a grower.

Every summer, the Columbia Basin comes alive with the scent of fresh mint. It’s a harvest we’ve been connected to for decades, ever since Steve Smith first partnered with Pacific Northwest mint farmers and helped introduce American-grown peppermint to tea drinkers around the world.

This July, our tea and sourcing teams returned to the Basin for the season’s first peppermint harvest and spent time with the farmers behind one of our most beloved ingredients.
