✨ GOA ✨
📍 Located on the western coast of India along the Arabian Sea, Goa is world-famous as India’s beach capital and is known for its coastline which attracts millions, both domestically and internationally. Once a Portuguese colony for over 450 years, Goa blends Indian and European influences in its architecture, cuisine, and lifestyle.
🍽️ Traditional Flavors:
- Cuisine is bold, tangy, and aromatic through layered spices and coastal ingredients like coconut, kokum, seafood, and palm vinegar. Traditional Goan vinegar is made from fermented coconut toddy which give dishes a distinct tang.
- Distinct culinary traditions shaped by Portuguese heritage divide Goan food into two categories: Hindu (milder, coconut-forward) and Catholic (spicier, vinegar-based, meat-heavy). These influences also lend to Goa being one of the few regions in India where pork is widely consumed.
Beyond the Plate...
🏠 The state’s colorful homes stem from Portuguese-era traditions, where houses were historically required to be painted annually, creating Goa’s iconic streetscapes.
🌳 Despite being India’s smallest state, nearly one-third of Goa is covered in forests and wildlife sanctuaries, offering a lesser-known side of biodiversity beyond its beaches.
🚤 Unlike many regions, Goa maintains a river-based lifestyle, with ferries still used for everyday transport in certain areas.
🥥 Coconut trees are protected in Goa - cutting one down often requires government permission.
🌧️ The state celebrates unique monsoon festivals, like Sao Joao, where people jump into wells to celebrate fertility and rain.
🥃 Feni: Indigenous to Goa, feni is a traditional cashew or coconut liquor with a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, deeply tied to Goan identity and local craftsmanship.
