Friends, it’s time now to pass the torch (and this account) to “The Blue Spoon Ladies,” — Brenda and Christina — who joined us for a Goodbye-Hello Party today with delicious samples of what’s to come. They’ll open The Balkan here on June 13 and have big plans. We wish them all the best!

(They will inherit this account June 1, but you’ll want to follow them on their new account, The Balkan.)

In a post by The Morning Sun about our last day today, the caption said people turned out to celebrate Brad and Andra. While that’s a truly lovely statement, we believe what people really turned out to celebrate today was greater than two individuals. It’s greater than the vintage tile floors and tin ceilings. It’s greater than our baristas past and present, or pup cups, or espresso drinks, or any of that.

What they were celebrating, but perhaps didn’t realize, was a space and the connections that are made in it.

A quick interaction when popping in and out for a drink before work and you run into someone you haven’t seen in awhile.

A Saturday morning tradition with a spouse or child.

Young friends who hang out after school, retirees who solve all the world’s problems on a Sunday morning, and colleagues who meet to discuss business.

A space from which to watch a parade go by, study for an exam, read in a corner, get a feel for what the town is like when here for a campus visit, or perform your first gig in a band.

Such spaces are essential to a community. Essential. Pittsburg is lucky to have a few, and now we are going to work to add one to Frontenac.

In a world in which people can be so isolated, and a world in which drive-throughs seem easier, we hope each of you will do your part to help keep spaces like this alive and thriving.

We were blown away by the turn-out today, and now, with this post, we celebrate the true Root: some of the many wonderful people who have enjoyed this space over the years for 100 different reasons. We are happy to have connected with you here and we are grateful you were part of our story.

✌️ ❤️ ☕️

A few housekeeping notes before we get all sentimental on you, because we are still getting lots of questions and it is a bit confusing!

☕️ We sold Root to the owners of the Blue Spoon.

☕️ They will assume ownership of our equipment and other assets in this space on June 1.

☕️ They will still operate Blue Spoon a few blocks to the north.

☕️ They will close this space for 2 weeks while they reconfigure the space and equipment and train their staff.

☕️ They have decided to reopen on June 13 under a different name: The Balkan, which on the weekends will be called The Canary Lounge. They will have a cocktail bar and a food menu, along with waiters and bartenders.

☕️ We are downsizing and opening a smaller, simplified coffee shop called McKay Street Coffeehouse in the new library being built in Frontenac. Part of that project is the Heritage Hall Museum which takes visitors on a stroll down McKay Street about 100 years ago. It is across from Miners Park and a block from the school where Brad’s mom and Andra taught and he went to school. His family has lived in Frontenac since his great grandpa immigrated from Italy in 1905 and worked there as a coal miner.

☕️ We will do a soft opening at McKay Street at 2 p.m. June 5 in time for Mining Days. Brad and Dominic, our son and lead barista, will run the shop. Andra will continue her full time job at Pitt State but will continue to play an active role in the ownership and management of the new shop, just as she did with Root. Morgan, one of our baristas, is coming with us. Jess, a barista who graduated last year, will help out this summer until we get new baristas hired and trained in August.

☕️ At McKay Street, we will serve many of the same handcrafted coffee, espresso, chai, and Italian sodas you’ve grown accustomed to, although the menu will be simplified a bit and signature drink names will reflect the heritage of Frontenac. We will sell the same bags of beans we have sold at Root and we will still partner with Signet Coffee Roasters for our coffee beans and Bearded Lady Roasters for our espresso beans.

☕️ We will not serve crepes at McKay Street but will serve pastries and later this summer hope to have some ready-to-eat refrigerated lunch options.

☕️ We hope you’ll drop by and check us out!

☕️ On May 31 from 8 to 11 a.m. here at Root, we will hold a collaborative “Goodbye-Hello” come-and-go party with the new owners. We’ll have some free sips of iced tea and lemonade and they’ll have some pastry samples while supplies last. We’ll offer 10 percent off all lattes as a thank you, and we’ll draw for a few giveaways.

☕️ We’ll close on May 31 at 4 p.m.

There are so many people to thank, and if we start we fear we might overlook someone, so we’ll just say thanks to each and every person who played any sort of role in making Root the special place it was for almost 10 years. You know who you are.

✌️ ❤️ ☕️
Peace, love, and coffee,
Brad and Andra

Hey friends, we’ll be here to fuel you with your favorites one last week before closing at the end of the day Saturday and passing the keys to the new owners!

They’ll reopen The Balkan with a new menu, new approach, and new cocktail lounge on June 13.

We hope you’ll stop by during our Goodbye-Hello Party on Saturday from 8-11.

We also hope to see you at McKay Street Coffeehouse in Frontenac starting June 5!

We’re celebrating this guy today! Drop by and congratulate Dominic on his 1,000th shift, or drop a note below!

He’s our most senior barista and has worked here since 2019 - that’s 2 years before we bought Root! He rarely calls in sick and almost never requests time off, he cares about quality and community, and knows our regulars’ orders before they get to the register.

He’s also our son, and we are proud of him.

He’ll have four days off for Memorial Day weekend (Note: if there are any outdoor enthusiasts out there his age, he’s looking to find a few camping buddies, which has been challenging from behind the counter!) then one last week here before he comes with us to McKay Street Coffeehouse!

Thank you, Dominic, for your dedication to this special place! ❤️

About our Root Market: Sales on items made by these amazing local entrepreneurs will pause at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, while we prepare for our last day of business May 31. If you need pampering items or small gifts, please come see us by 5 p.m. May 23!

Just a photo of a cute crocheted platypus and one of our customers to catch your attention. We're closing at 2:30 today (May 19) in anticipation of severe weather that is expected to move through our area this afternoon.

We are under a tornado watch and numerous schools and public facilities have closed throughout the Four State Area. Please stay safe and weather aware, friends!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to all of the graduating seniors from Pitt State and area high schools who came in with friends and family yesterday and today to celebrate at Root one last time — like this couple who came to study in Pittsburg all the way from Palau! We’ve loved being part of your story and wish you all the best in your next chapter! Congrats! ❤️

Thanks also to everyone who showed us grace and patience today during the rush. We are short-staffed on one of the busiest weekends of Spring because a few of our baristas are graduating, too, or have left for summer internships. We appreciate everyone hanging in there with us today! 🙏

Please note: we will be closed May 24-26 (Memorial Weekend). Thank you for understanding!

To those who bought bags of beans from us over the past few years, here's what's happening: We have sold the last bags under the Root label. Thanks to everyone who snapped them up each week; it truly means the world to us that you enjoyed them so! BUT GUESS WHAT....

This is not goodbye to these two roasts!

We've rebranding them to sell at our new shop, McKay Street Coffeehouse, starting June 5! In the meantime, we have FOUR bags (yes, just FOUR, so get 'em while ya can) of the new bags for sale here at Root starting Saturday morning.

With gratitude to our friends at Bearded Lady Roasters who worked with us to develop them. ✌❤☕

Big congrats this week to two members of the Root Crew who are graduating: Aubrie from Pitt State and Isabel from Pittsburg High School! 🧑‍🎓

They’ve balanced work with academics and extracurriculars and we’re very proud of them! 🎉

Aubrie’s last shift will be May 15 before she heads out to her new home in Hawaii, and we will miss her! ✈️

Our next shop is McKay Street Coffeehouse and we’d like to tell you about it!

It will open in early June in the newly built Frontenac Public Library — an amazing project that includes the very cool Heritage Hall Museum and the Tavella Community Room!

At the corner of McKay and Crawford streets, we have a great view of the charming new Miners Park.

Brad’s great-grandpa Bortolo Stefanoni immigrated from Italy and settled in Frontenac, where he would work as a deep shaft coal miner for 45 years. He married the love of his life, Katie Falletti, daughter of Dominic Falletti, also an Italian immigrant. Brad grew up a half mile from McKay Street on property settled by his great grandparents in their coal company-issued mining house.

His grandpa and dad owned their own small business, the Frontenac Garage, first on McKay Street, and then around the corner on Cayuga, for many years.

To say our new project is meaningful is an understatement.

McKay Street Coffeehouse will be much smaller that Root, but will still have the quality service, delicious hand crafted drinks, and welcoming spirit you’ve come to expect from us.

We will be open roughly the same hours as Root, except Sundays, and we'll have some outside seating.

We will continue to partner with Signet Coffee Roasters where we buy our coffee beans, and Bearded Lady, where we buy our espresso beans, so the flavor profiles and high standards for quality coffee and espresso drinks will remain. And yes, we'll still serve Andra's Almond Tea!

At McKay Street, we will continue to sell our bags of Raven’s Roast under the McKay Street label, but we will rename our Opera House Roast (named after the historic building Root is in) to "Heritage Roast" as a nod to the Heritage Hall and Brad's heritage. You’ll be able to buy those beans starting in June!

We’d very much appreciate you following the new shop on Facebook and Instagram at and we’d love for you to drop in and see us when we open!

We’ll own Root until June 1 when we turn the keys over to the Blue Spoon ladies, who are renaming it "The Balkan" (by day) and "The Canary Lounge" (by night). You can follow that account on Facebook and Instagram!

They will be closed for a few weeks and will hold a grand re-opening on June 13!

Thank you for reading!
