Motion lights help… for a few days.

Then coyotes, hawks, and bobcats learn:
“That light doesn’t hurt me.”

Lights are a nice EXTRA. Not your lock.

Better plan (defense in layers):
1) Outer fence + keep grass trimmed
2) A buffer zone (no hiding spots)
3) Inner run/coop that’s hard to break
• hardware cloth (not chicken wire)
• solid roof (not netting)
• anti-dig apron pinned down with garden stakes

Replacing birds after a loss is stressful. So we keep the start SIMPLE.

At AZ Chickens, our chicks never touch the ground before they reach yours.

Why that matters:
• Less mess
• Less germs
• Less “what did they step in?” worry

Clean handling lowers disease risk.
Then YOU finish the job at home with a clean brooder, steady heat (no temp swings), and fresh water.

Want a “wholesale deal” for your family flock?

Our Backyard Bundle is simple:
You get MORE birds for a better price.

Why that helps (especially for beginners):
- A bigger starter flock = better long-term egg plan
- If you lose a chick early (it happens), you’re not starting over
- Less stress… because you planned for real life

This is the bundle we built for busy families who just want it to work.

Automatic doors are like magic. They let your chickens out when the sun comes up. They lock them up safe at night.

But here is the thing: Batteries die. Predators do not.

A coyote or a hawk in Arizona is always looking for a door left open. If your battery runs out, your birds are in trouble. Sometimes a chicken stays outside when the door shuts by mistake.

We call predator defense "defense in layers." Your coop and run are the final layer of safety. The door must work every single time to keep your flock safe.

Do not just trust the timer. Go outside and check the door every evening. Make sure everyone is inside and the door is locked tight.

Technology is a great helper, but nothing beats your own eyes. Check the tracks for dirt and check those batteries often!

Replacing birds? Bio-security comes FIRST.

Random birds (swap meets, parking lots, “a friend of a friend”) can bring mites and sickness into your coop fast.

What we do instead:
• Clean hatchery chicks
• Safe packing + fast shipping
• Simple support for the first 48 hours

If you’re rebuilding after a loss, start clean so you don’t lose more.

If you’re scared your chicks won’t make it… you’re not alone.

That’s why our Backyard Bundle has an Arrival Warranty option.
We take the risk so you don’t have to.

Because most chick losses happen from stress + temp swings + wrong setup.
Not “bad luck.”

Keep it simple on day 1:
• Set brooder temp and keep it steady (no little swings)
• Give electrolytes + probiotics when they arrive
• Feed un-medicated starter/grower (medicated is a short treatment)

Do you want a bodyguard for your chickens?

If you have a big yard, a Livestock Guardian Dog (LGD) can be a huge help. Dogs like the Great Pyrenees are famous for this job. They love to watch over their birds. They bark at things like coyotes, hawks, and bobcats to keep them far away from your home.

But here is the most important part: A dog is just one layer of safety. We call this “defense in layers.”

Even with a great dog, your coop must be very strong. Predators are smart and sneaky. You still need hardware cloth on your run and a solid roof over their heads. Think of it like a team. The dog guards the yard, and the coop guards the birds while they sleep at night.

A dog can’t be everywhere at once. But when you have a good dog and a tough coop, your flock is much safer. This is how you build a flock that lasts for years.

If your coop smells like ammonia… your birds are breathing that.

P**p makes ammonia.
Summer heat makes it build up fast.
And ammonia can hurt chicken lungs.

Simple clean-coop rule:
If YOU can smell it, it’s time to clean.

Quick wins:
• Scoop the wet spots every day
• Add fresh dry bedding
• Keep air moving (shade + good airflow)

Clean coop = calm birds, strong lungs.

Most chicken attacks happen at night.

The nightly rule is simple:
LOCK THE DOOR. EVERY SUNSET.

Not “later.” Not “after dinner.”
Sun goes down = birds go in = door gets locked.

Why it works:
Coyotes, hawks, and bobcats look for the easy meal.
A closed, solid coop door ends most problems.

Make it a habit:
Set a phone alarm called “LOCK THE COOP.”

Your chicks can be “good birds”… and still struggle.

Sometimes you need an expert to look at YOUR yard.

That’s what a Flock Audit is.
We check the stuff that causes most losses:
- heat + shade + airflow
- brooder temps (no swings)
- feed + water setup
- coop/run safety (coyotes, hawks, bobcats)
- gaps, doors, and weak spots

You’ll get simple fixes you can do fast.
So your birds live… and your family can relax.

Want us to look at your setup? Message “AUDIT”.
