It’s Tuff Day! If anyone has any old pictures of Tuff or the old bar please share as we are trying to make a collection. Here is what AI found “Burwell “Tuff” Knebel (full name Burwell “Tuff” or B.L. Knebel) was a longtime Pflugerville, Texas, resident, businessman, and community leader who owned and operated Knebel’s Tavern—the city’s oldest business—for more than 55 years.  
Born December 19, 1923, in Austin to parents P.B. and Emma Knebel, he grew up in Pflugerville, graduated from Pflugerville High School, and worked briefly at the 7-Up Bottling Company before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943. He served three years during World War II. In 1947, he married La Nelle Weiss (they were married 56 years until his death). He took over Knebel’s Tavern (at roughly 102–109 Pecan St. E in downtown Pflugerville) after his father passed away and ran it as his lifelong passion. The tavern sold beer, barbecue, and even small items like nail clippers; it was a classic old-school dive bar that felt frozen in time, featured in Texas Monthly’s “89 Greatest Texas Bars” list in the May 1983 issue. 
Tuff was deeply involved in local civic life: he served on the Pflugerville City Council and Immanuel Lutheran Church Council, belonged to the Lion’s Club and American Legion (Knebel Post), and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Greater Pflugerville Chamber of Commerce. He was known for helping anyone in need and was remembered fondly by patrons (who were named honorary pallbearers at his funeral). He passed away on March 28, 2004, at age 80 and is buried in the Immanuel Lutheran Church Cemetery in Pflugerville. ”
