Unlike oysters, mussles grow naturally in Tomales Bay as long as there is something they can grow on.

This is one of our newest mussel rafts with a protoype muscle line. The chains hanging down from the raft are attached to a lead line for the muscles to attach and grow on. After the raft has been out on the bay for awhile, we'll tow it in for cleaning off the muscles before bringing it back out.

Oysters are one of the most sustainably farmed products in the world. No inputs (feed, fertilizer, fresh water) are needed. Additionally, they filter pollutants and carbon from the environment creating healthier marine ecosystems for the fish and wildlife that make their home around the oyster reefs.

At home, adding oyster shells to your garden's compost or mulch provides additional nutrients to help your plants grow while you also permanently sequester carbon from our air.

Did you know besides filtering and removing pollutants from the water, oysters also help with marine diversity?

They help vital seagrasses grow and the oyster farm acts as an artificial reef, creating safe areas for small fish, crabs, and other aquatic life.

Happy Plastic Free July!

We've reduced the amount of plastic waste our retail shop produces by:
🦪Using reusable trays, plates, and silverware
🦪Offering recycling and composting bins for on-site food waste
🦪Using compostable take-out containers for to-go orders

BYOC (Bring Your Own Cooler) to help us reduce even more plastic waste for oysters you’re taking home. Working together, we can continue reducing our plastic input and keep our communities and oceans clean for us all to enjoy!
