Polar Treat The best ice cream and specialty treats you can find in Down East Maine, along with a full food menu that includes fresh seafood! We are CASH ONLY.

We are a take out with outdoor seating, operating daily from April through October. The Polar Treat is a Down East icon, also known as the Dairy Joy or the A-Frame. A stopping place for locals and tourists, the establishment has been here 75 years! 2024 marks the 75th Anniversary of Polar Treat, Perry, Maine! John & Mary MacDonald began the business and kept it running for 50 years, sold it to Jac

k and Bernadette Maloney in 2001, and only the third owners - Michelle and Judson Curtis - have owned and operated the establishment since 2019. The Polar Treat offers soft serve chocolate, vanilla, twist, and a special flavor of the week, a variety of hard serve flavors, shakes, flurries, sundaes, floats, dips, and so much more! The Polar Treat also sells food, expanding its menu each year. In 2024, we added a huge selection of the freshest seafood you can get Down East, cooked to perfection! Other food items include burgers, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, chicken, and many appetizer options. Check our page for our weekly specials in addition to our regular menu. Call in orders are always welcome! We have added a screened in, indoor eating area and have several picnic tables are available for outdoor seating, shaded with umbrellas. Feel free to bring a blanket to enjoy your treats on, too! Hours adjust each year and the business operates from April to October or November, depending on weather, closed annually during the Maine winter. Hello 👋 JUNE! In the spirit of a brand new month, we have a brand new soft serve for you! (Sorry mint lovers, we had to clean the machine this morning so we opted to change the flavor, but don’t worry, it’ll be back again later in the season!)

It’s here….DOLE WHIPS! Ok, we can’t actually call it “whips” because this is Disney’s name for it, so we are naming it the Down East Dole!

What the heck is it? Our very FIRST dairy free soft serve flavors! We’ve got orange 🍊 and pineapple 🍍flavors each available or twisted together! The consistency of Dole is slightly different than regular soft serve🍦and it’s got a nice tang to these flavors! Pineapple dipped in chocolate: our pick of the week! 😍

We hope you LOVE these options, and we already have a couple other non-dairy soft serve flavors on deck later in the summer (think mango, watermelon, maybe even another surprise flavor…)

Come try a taste for yourself! These will run starting today through next Tuesday, June 9!

Some days go completely as planned and others….don’t. 😂

Sometimes, like tonight, even a quick power outage causes us a little chaos. Food orders get delayed because we have to stop and regroup. When things resume, a printer doesn’t work or the screen says orders are headed toward the 20 minute mark - and if we can assure you of anything, it’s sheer panic in the kitchen when the Polar Treat times are anywhere north of 12-15 minutes, tops. 😅

Sometimes we forget the sauces, there’s a shell in the lobster roll, the fries aren’t as crispy as you’d prefer. You got the wrong kind of sprinkles or the waffle cone had a crack in it. And, behind the scenes, it looks like a bomb went off in the entire place and there’s probably something leaking somewhere and we are out of the exact thing the customer in front of us really wanted. But, this team smiles through the chaos, hustles hard, and will work endlessly to make sure they go above and beyond for every customer.

At the end of the day, we reflect. We realize we forgot something on a burger or a sundae, and we wake up at 2am making our to do lists for the next day, and we quietly put the entire place back together after hours, ready for another day tomorrow.

This post is simply to say thank you - for your patience as amazing customers during the chaos, for realizing we won’t ever be perfect but will try our hardest, for the team who doesn’t ever waver during the busiest times.

Despite the chaos, we don’t stop. And, if you don’t have a team like the Polar Treat team, you need one. You can’t do it without them. You can’t do it without the amazing customers who understand it’s not always going to be flawless. Thank you to every single one of you for your continued support of a down east legacy. We love and appreciate you ALL! ❤️
