Hoagie History

The hoagie didn’t appear by accident, it was born out of Pennsylvania’s working class roots. Its origins trace back to Hog Island during World War I, where Italian immigrant shipyard workers packed long rolls with cured meats, cheese, lettuce, onions, and oil to get through exhausting shifts.

These “hog island sandwiches” eventually became known simply as hoagies, spreading from job sites into Italian delis across Philadelphia. What makes a hoagie Pennsylvanian is its purpose. It’s built on good bread, quality meat, and balance, nothing extra, nothing wasted. Over generations, it became a staple of neighborhood delis, family gatherings, and game days.

Other regions may rename it, but in Pennsylvania, the hoagie isn’t just a sandwich. It’s a piece of local history, wrapped in paper and taken seriously.

Good news here. Shout out to the Hunger Brothers for their research. Had no idea there are 15 other places on the Gulf Coast that serve the beloved Cheesesteak.
