𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘀… 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝘀, 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗹𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗴𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝗴𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻, 𝗜’𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗶𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗿𝘁-𝗶𝘀𝗵… 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘄𝗲 𝗴𝗼.
This week will be our last full week open for a while. We will be open THURSDAY, FRIDAY, and SATURDAY like normal.
Next week and the following weeks. Until further notice, we will be open only on Fridays.
Our business was born out of necessity. I was diagnosed with a chronic, progressive disease process over three years ago. I lost a very good-paying job with a great company because I could no longer put in the required hours or keep up with the work (they were very patient and tried to keep me).
After many procedures and visits with some of the best medical professionals in the country, I thought I was able to try something.
I’m unable to work for others because when I have bad days, they are very bad, and I need to take a lot of medications just to function at a basic level.
With our limited savings and a lifelong passion for cooking, we built and opened M.T. Smoke.
Here, working for myself, I can take a break when I need one and take medications without the danger of doing something that will put others in harm's way.
And it has worked until about three months ago.
The frequency of issues and their severity have only increased. I do not have medical insurance, and like so many self-employed, the cost of quality healthcare is unaffordable.
In short, this condition is killing me, but working 12-16-hour days 4 days in a row is shortening the time I have left and making the time I have nearly unbearable, all the while taking handfuls of medicine that dull my brain and make me feel like the village idiot.
There must be another way forward.
Until I figure that out, the schedule will stand - Fridays only - starting next week. If you have catering scheduled, it will be done as promised, and it will be flawless.
We will still take catering orders for more than 40 people, as the labor can be scheduled more easily.
Even though money will be super tight, we will still do the PK Specials for anyone who needs a hot meal and cannot pay on the days we are open.
