The majority of our menu is fresh, local, made from scratch & contains the special ingredient: LOVE ♥ Gaskill, Jr., was an entrepreneur & trailblazer on Virginia's Easern Shore. If you knew him, you probably called him Big Richard. If you knew him really well, you just called him "Big." Big would get an idea for a business, then go about putting wheels into motion & involve his whole family in the

endeavour. Everyone in the family brought a different talent to the overall success. In 1965, Big and his family began the Wiggly Piggly grocery store in Exmore, VA. The Piggly Wiggly grocery chain, already established, contacted him and felt that name was too close to theirs & requested he change it. Through a local contest, the store was renamed Meatland with 4 locations on the Shore. Among their many endeavours, the Gaskill family also began The Trawler Restaurant in Exmore in 1980, featuring famiy recipes from Granny, Barbara (Grandmom), Rockin' Rick & Steve Gaskill. The Trawler was "the place to be back in the day" and many, many great meals & memories were shared there. After dreaming about it for years, Big's grandson, Richie, and his wife, Kelley approached Grandmom, Rockin' Rick and Steve Gaskill in 2008 with the idea of opening another Gaskill family restaurant. They were advised just how much work goes into a restaurant: you breathe it, eat it, sleep it, wake up to it, dream about it, plan for it and live it 24/7. Through a lot of hard work and dedication from family and close friends, the dream became a reality. Things began to fall into place and Big's Place opened in September 2009. Today, the family comes together again- with added generations through children and grandchildren- bringing back some of those good Trawler Restaurant memories and meals. Incorporating old family recipes with "more modern" recipes (that Grandmom sometimes just shakes her head at), the Gaskill family proudly continues the tradition of fresh, local offerings and delicious home cooking. Big's Place has a comfortable, ecclectic atmosphere that makes you feel immediately at home. The friendly staff and Southern hospitality add to the ambiance and total experience. Big's Place, The Gaskill Family Restaurant, was open from September 2009 to April 2014 on Virginia's Eastern Shore. During that time a lot of good food and great friendships were made from scratch.

Now, in 2024, the building is about to be torn down. With permission from the new owner, we had an opportunity to go through the building one last time before demolition begins.

We've spent time together this evening with customers then, after closing, with our staff family reminiscing, laughing and sharing. It has been a wonderful way to wrap up this chapter of Big's Place. Stay tuned -- as soon as we have news on our next home, we will announce it from here.

I wanted to take a quick moment to wish my husband, Richie, a Happy Anniversary. It's a bittersweet evening as it is Big's last night at this location but we are so happy to be spending it with all of you xoxo Reservations are filing up quickly, so definitely call 757-442-5535 so we can guarantee your table :) Grandmom has made her famous sweet potato biscuits (while they last) Richie has cooked a fresh Choice Prime Rib for dinner, Josh's Blackened Peppercorn-Encrusted Steak, Reverend Sallye's Sinful Seafood Pasta, Lemon Pepper Herbed Chicken Breast (broiled). If you're gonna go out, go out BIG! The mission I chose to accept overnight: a 13x20 pb&j single layer cake (birthday surprise for pick up Saturday early afternoon), 3 layer pb&j cake for pick up this evening (dinner eat-in reservation at 6) and a 13x20 baby's first tv character-laden cake with 12 cupcakes with baby blossom on each one and a separate "mini" cake for the birthday boy who is 1 (pick up at 11:30 Sat morning.) I'm right on schedule :) Don't want to do a full reveal until Amy picks up the 1st birthday cake ensemble, so here's a picture of the Baby Blossom cupcakes.

REMEMBER, as tonight is our last night, RESERVATIONS are highly recommended. Call 757-442-5535. We are going to run on the 'summer rule of thumb' .. rather than having a set time we close, we will be open 'til the last person is done eating. At this point, the early- to mid-dinner reservations are filling up quickly. Call Kelley to schedule available time for your party.

Have you tried our Buffalo Shrimp? (shown here) Richie's made-from-scratch Regular Buffalo sauce has just the right blend of spicy kick and tangy twist to satisfy. If you are feeling bolder, request Richie's 4 Alarm Buffalo Sauce... he delights in making it as hot as you can stand with our supply of ghost peppers and scorpion peppers :) We also have Miss Kelley's Crab Toast and Coconut Shrimp on the appetizers board. YES :D Tonight is Chicken & Dumplin night... it's a good idea to make reservations tonight as the list of folks joining us is growing. The chickens are slow cooking to keep them nice and juicy, Grandmom is getting ready to roll out the dumplins soon... the cake order is baking and time is getting away quickly! Trying to get another cake baked for dinner, keep your fingers crossed :)
