Masarap Lumpia has been “Bringing the Lumpia” to Ventura County since November 2009, but honestly, I come from a family that has been food producers for decades & more like a whole century!!!
My Lolo, Philip C. Llanos came from Cebu City to California in 1923 & he was not only a vet in the US Army, he was a farm worker.
When he retired he decided to start raising pigs & sold lechon in the late 1960’s until the 1980’s when I was a little girl.
And in order to raise us herself, my mother, Edita Llanos Masaya, stayed home & made Filipino food quick & easy for her community.
She offered a plethora of classic Filipino dishes & here is just a short list of her offerings…
Adobo (chicken or pork)
Apretada
Arroz Caldo
Caldareta
Embotido
Empanadas
Escabetche
Lechon Kawali
Lumpia
Menudo
Pancit
Relleñong Bangus
Tinola
Sarciado
Siopao
Tinapa
Bibinka
Bitso Bitso
Buche/Buchi
Carioka
Cassava
Cuchinta
P**o
Suman
Taho
And so many more that I’m forgetting.
My mother’s business was licensed before many of the Filipino ladies in the area ever sold Filipino food.
My Mom was not only an AMAZING cook, she was a straight up HUSTLER!!!
And although she could have easily worked as a psychic like my Lola, she used alchemy in her food instead.
She was by far one of her most well known caterers in Ventura County & to this day, even though she has been gone since Dec. 2008, if I meet an old school Filipino in the area, they’ll ask, “Anak ba iko ni Edita at Nilo?” & when I say yes to confirm, they’ll share all the beloved dishes they have had of hers.
Although my business is DRASTICALLY different than my mother’s, the intention is still the same… food made with love & alchemy.
Pull up a chair, you’re always welcome at our table!
