Did you know that March 6, 1943 was a “black day“ for Red Oak, Iowa? Over 100 telegrams arrived on that date. One mother received three telegrams regarding two sons and a son-in-law. The first major battle in North Africa for American troops was in the Kasserine Pass in Tunisia. The casualty rate was stunning. Red Oak suffered a loss of 45 on that single day more than any other community of its size in America. Southwest Iowa communities were hardest hit in the early months as local National Guard units were called to duty as part of the 34th Infantry Division. That same date Maj. General Patton took command of US Forces and reorganized Army II Corps.
