In November of 2020, I signed my lease at 147 Main. I burned the midnight oil for 2 months and by January 2021 I opened. I had two small racks of vintage, a jewelry counter I pulled up from the basement, a 1960s Bunn Drip Coffee Maker I found on Marketplace, and a curtain covering the other 3/4 of the shop getting worked on.

My initial hope was to open as a coffee shop and sell vintage. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good cup o’ Joe (which is hard to find around here) — but my vision for Groundhouse was to create a space to gather like minded creatives, artists, musicians, the “freaks”, the “weirdos”, the outsiders, or anyone that needed a place to be who they are, as they are, without judgement. I was less passionate about the coffee, and more passionate about having a space to inspire, be inspired and to create. I truly hope that you’ll always feel accepted and supported as you are and wherever you are in your humaneness.

And while the coffee is still on pause, (I apologize for the false advertising of my giant window sign 🥹) — I’m happy as hell for what has been cultivated here. The evolution of Groundhouse is beyond what I could have imagined.

1.5 years later, we’re still kickin! I have met so many incredible humans, lifelong friends, hosted events to support causes and raise awareness, collaborated with other artists, and finally, FINALLY allowed myself the space to unapologetically create. Groundhouse is truly the inside of my brain as a physical space.

There is so much more to come and I can’t thank y’all enough for your support. Thank you for accepting me, supporting me, for your patience, and for your love.

Being a small business owner isn’t an easy feat but I truly can’t imagine doing anything else. Your support directly supports my family, and has a massive impact on the little girl I’m raising— to see her mom show up everyday loving what she does, and that it is A OK to write your own story. At the end of the day, this is all for her.

I’d love love love to know Groundhouse mean to you? Let me know in the comments!! ❤️‍🔥

Part 3… continued!

In 2015 I had my daughter. I put a pause on vintage, embraced motherhood, but couldn’t NOT create something else so I started up another business, Kimama — robes and dusters for new mothers who craved comfortable luxury in the transition from pregnancy to motherhood.

After 1.5 years of city life with a new baby and no family within 3.5 hours, we decided to move back to my childhood home. Once back in the Catskills, I spent a better part of 4 years healing, reconnecting, and rediscovering myself as a woman and a mother.

What I’d realized after stripping away the identity that was once created for me, there was a little girl inside who’d never expanded into the fullest expression of herself. My creativity and passions were rarely acknowledged and never encouraged.

I, as many, have not gone through life without suffering, loss, trauma and abuse. I spent years meditating, seeking teachings and teachers, binging on self development podcasts and books. I took a deep dive into mothering myself. I chose to do the work, and to show up for my daughter in the most nurturing, loving and present way possible. As a healed/(ing) woman . I sold most of the vintage I had in storage to other consignment and vintage shops in town. I felt this need to strip myself to the core of my being. I recognized that I didn’t have the space or capacity to create at this moment.

Yoga became a way for me to alchemize this and I transitioned into teaching. I soon then became an empowerment coach. The desire to hold space for others and their own transformation was incredibly life changing. This role brought me closer to my own fire of creativity and the urge to express myself through my art.

As it does, the universe gives you exactly what you need at exactly the right time. In 2020, I had started transitioning into teaching privates and retreats — but then the shutdown happened. I had a closet full of vintage, a space was available for rent and a little bit of emergency $ set aside.

Fast forward >> I was raised on 60 acres, in the foothills of the Catskills until I was 18. The forests and fields were my playground. I would escape to my favorite spot in the woods and talk to my Native American guides (not kidding) and force my friends into séances 😂.

I was raised on country music and rock n roll — and If you know my family, you’ll know there’s likely not a single song in either genre we don’t know by heart. I grew up dancing, from 5-21 y/o and found a love of self expression through clothes and photography in my early teens. In high school, I started making my own clothes. I taught myself to hand sew, or I’d use a glue gun if my ADHD got the best of me. Ha!

At 15 I discovered my love for vintage. At 19 I started styling my friends in college — I was a photography Major turned Fashion Major turned Music Industry turned communications at . I moved to Brooklyn In 2011, and got the “survival in NYC advertising job” but id spend my days off hitting up estate sales and slingin’ vintage finds off my stoop. This turned into my first vintage resell biz — Goldnix. I eventually started vending at Brooklyn Night Bazarr and — my day job was selling Advertising space for National Media 😴 which allowed me to experience so much of NYC aim my early twenties.

It was all very glamorous but honestly, I lived for my side hustles. I’d model for friends, with friends, collaborate with production teams — I’d spend hours in meetings designing garments and take any chance I could to chat someone who was anyone up in hopes to style them.

Howdy folks 👋🏼

There are a lot of new faces around here so I thought I’d do a little intro post! Be warned this may be a tad lengthy, but I feel the desire to give you a little peak behind the scenes. So here y’all go:

I’m Ali! The owner, creator and human behind Groundhouse 🫠

My family moved from Central Oregon to Unadilla, NY in the early 90’s — (home of the first boy scout troop in America 😂) when I was six. My dad was a New Yorker turned Californian and my mom was born and raised in Missouri, where most of my maternal family still lives. They met in Prineville, OR (Crook County) — while my dad owned and operated the raddest and baddest bar in Central Oregon called The Waterhole or also know as, “The Hole”. 🤘🏼

You’ll likely see some photos hidden around the shop. The Waterhole has had huge influence on my life and honestly, the shop itself— the cowboys stopping in after a long day, dusty boots, worn in wranglers, Budweiser cans, 70/80s Chevy’s parked out front, the scratching of a changed record in the jukebox, and hoots and hollers over my nana’s pies.

I remember sitting up to the bar with a fork and a slice and pealing back lottery tickets taken from a vending machine, as Waylon & Willie sang “Mama’s Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboy’s”. Or my Aunts singing Lita Ford’s “ Kiss Me Deadly” in 501 button fly’s and cropped beer t-shirts.

My roots are just as deep in the West as they are in these mountains. (…to be continued)

BORN BAD because I won’t play by your rules

BORN BAD because my voice scares you

BORN BAD because I’m powerful

BORN BAD because I came into this world as a menstruating female

BORN BAD because I am a creator

BORN BAD because I question authority

BORN BAD because I lead

Born bad because my beliefs differ from yours

Born bad because… y’all can fill in the blank. Give me all the other reasons I’m not worthy.

OUR WORK IS NOT DONE HERE! 🤬

I’m angry. I hope you’re angry too. I have so much to say about this but I’m so filled with rage at the moment that it would likely just be profanity. So I’m going to sit with this and allow it to alchemize into something more strategic, powerful, and impactful.

10% of all proceeds today donated to Planned Parenthood. I’d also like to plan a gathering / March / rally at the shop next week. Who’s down!?! 🪧🪧🪧🪧🪧

THIS IS NOT JUST ABOUT ABORTION. IT IS ABOUT THE INNATE FREEDOM A WOMAN SHOULD BE GRANTED UPON ENTERING THIS WORLD. IT IS ABOUT THE FREEDOM TO MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT OUR BODIES. IT IS ABOUT THE WOMEN BEFORE US WHO FOUGHT FOR US. IT IS ABOUT SEPARATING THE CHURCH FROM GOVERNING OUR F*CKING UTERUS’. ITS ABOUT PROTECTING GIRLS WHO ARE ABUSED. ITS ABOUT PROTECTING OUR SISTERS. ITS ABOUT CHOICE.
