How many people have we encountered who claim they are good as their reason for not asking Jesus for the salvation only he can provide. We know from God’s word that’s neither true, nor sufficient.

We may all have moments of “goodness” but the scriptures remind us not one of us is good. Jesus tells us plainly that He is the only way to the Father.

I don’t pretend to know the heart or thought process of those trying to stand on their own perceived righteousness to reach Heaven. I wonder if a fear to open one’s heart to God, so He can reveal our sins is at least part of the reason.

Most of us grow up with the knowledge that punishment awaits us when our disobedience is discovered, even when we are truly sorry. And that’s just from earthly authority. The concept of a God who forgives the repentant sinner completely and forever is foreign to so many.

One of our most important tasks then, is to reveal the breadth and depth of God’s love for us.

As a child, my primary motivations for obeying my parents were love and fear. The same is true with my Heavenly Father. I love God and want to please Him. I also fear His chastisement when I disobey.

The desire is there and the concept is simple. It’s the ex*****on where I fail. I am so thankful my Heavenly Father is full of love, grace, and mercy.

As the primary caretakers at infancy and early childhood, mothers generally have the greatest early influence on the lives of our children. In his 1865 poem titled “What Rules the World”, William Ross Wallace wrote, "The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world.”

A father’s influence grows as the child gets older. It may be more subtle or indirect for some fathers, but it is still very profound. Even when a father is not present, the child will seek out a substitute.

The importance of the father having a close relationship with his Heavenly Father cannot be overstated. Being able, as a father, to look to God for guidance in bringing up a child in the way he or she should go is critical.

Because my walk with God was not what it should have been when my children were still home, my example was also not what it should have been. I have some making up to do. I thank God for giving me the opportunity.

I am reminded today of the tragedy associated with the taking of one’s own life. Su***de is, as one person put it, a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

And it is not the affliction of the unsaved alone. Even the children of God can feel overwhelmed with despair and isolation when Satan interferes to separate God’s children from their Heavenly Father.

This is just one of the many reasons why we must continue to pray faithfully. God is not only able and ready to help us through all situations, He relishes the closeness when we are completely dependent on Him.

As the children’s song says: “Read your Bible, pray every day, and you’ll grow, grow, grow.”

I have such a feeling of peace and contentment when I am in the will of God.

I fancy myself something of a handyman…”A jack of all trades, master of none.” I can’t count the number of times I’ve looked at a project and thought to myself, “I can do that.”

I certainly learned some skills and had some successes (more so after learning the skills). But much more often, I cost myself more time, money, and aggravation. Many times I had to admit failure and call in the professional.

Too often we do the same thing with God, especially as inexperienced Christians. (I’m guilty of this). We try taking on Satan ourselves and fail.

It’s not necessary. God is always with us and ready to do the heavy lifting for us. Absolutely everything we need is in God’s word.

My earthly father has been dead for over 35 years. I loved him and love him still, and I miss him. There were also times when I didn’t like my dad. That was when I was much younger and had not learned to appreciate him and all he had to offer.

Sadly, I struggle with the same problem with God. I love Him, but far too often I fall to truly appreciate everything He does for us, regardless of the circumstances.

Even more than my earthly father, God’s love is boundless, timeless, tireless, and unconditional. We owe God the same.
