This morning, we gathered for Mental Health Awareness Sunday—a time to make space for the struggles we carry in our minds, bodies, and souls. 💚

Together, we reflected on what it means to move beyond easy answers toward real presence: listening, learning, advocating, and simply showing up for one another in the hard moments.

We are grateful for everyone who joined us, and for all the providers, advocates, friends, and loved ones who help make healing and hope possible.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this meaningful morning of worship, reflection, and community. May we continue to listen beyond the compulsory “fine” and build a community where all can be whole. 💚

What is one small way we can show up for one another this week?

It's been a busy season at Urban Abbey, and we're not slowing down any time soon!

🎒 Between coffee bar sales and our pie bake off, we were able to raise over $1,600 for Liberty Elementary School! These funds will be used to feed teachers dinner during parent-teacher conferences and more.
🎓 We raised over $620 for True Potential Scholarships to support community college students in Nebraska and Iowa
🍞 We collected canned food for Central High School's student food pantry
🎁 We were able to give teacher gift bags for the teachers' first day back at school at Liberty Elementary
🎫 We attended community events with other nonprofits like Voices for Children's Raise Your Voice luncheon and Civic Nebraska's Strengthening Democracy Awards

And more!

We are looking forward to another great month at Urban Abbey!

Join Dr. John Spilker-Beed for a special presentation at Urban Abbey, this Sunday, October 4th

"This presentation is rooted in Bryan Stevenson’s work for truth and reconciliation around the legacy of slavery in the United States. It is inspired by my collaboration with the Equal Justice Initiative in Montgomery Alabama, including the Legacy Museum and the National Memorial for Peace and Justice. On September 12, 2017, Bryan Stevenson visited Nebraska Wesleyan University and spoke about four practices from his book Just Mercy and his work with the Equal Justice Initiative: 1) get proximate to the problem, closer to groups and people who are suffering and neglected in their suffering, 2) change the narratives that sustain inequality, 3) stay hopeful, because hopelessness is the enemy of justice, and 4) be willing to do uncomfortable things. His presentation inspired me to begin researching and teaching on racial injustice. While conducting research, music appeared in unexpected and striking ways. This presentation documents the ways in which music was key to racialized dehumanization, a discovery that invites people to care more deeply by naming music’s role in racial violence (a form of truth-telling) and noting opportunities for racial reconciliation and repair."

New month, new community partner! 🧡🎃

For the month of October, 10% of all coffee bar sales will go to support Omaha Together One Community (OTOC)! OTOC seeks to teach folks across Omaha how to become effective leaders and organizers, hold elected officials accountable, and make positive change through collective action.

Stop by any time this month for a pumpkin spice latte or an apple c***r, and know that you’re helping to make a difference in our community!

☕️ Happy National Coffee Day!

Around here, coffee is about more than caffeine. It’s conversation, community, a cozy place to land, and sometimes just a really good latte. 💛

And every cup you enjoy here helps support the work of our community partner - this month is it True Potential Scholarship . So really, drinking coffee today is practically an act of service.

Happy National Coffee Day, Abbey friends!

This morning, we gathered to honor the many ribbons we carry—the diagnoses, the recoveries, the grief, the hope, and the people we hold close through it all.

We were especially grateful to welcome Rev. Debra’s aunt, Evelyn McKnight, who shared her own cancer story with such honesty, courage, and heart. Her words reminded us of the power of telling our stories, showing up for one another, and making space for both the hard and the hopeful.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this beautiful morning of blessing, reflection, and community. 💗

Who are you carrying with you today? We invite you to share a name, a ribbon, a heart, or a word of hope in the comments as we continue to hold one another in love. 🎗️💕
