ok ... has anyone ever done this? This definitely was not a tradition in our house.

Some Polish families kept Christmas dinner in the bathtub. A live carp, for days.

Carp is the centre of the Christmas Eve supper, and for generations the only way to be sure it was fresh was to buy it alive. So a few days before Christmas the fish came home in a bag of water and went into the bathtub.

Nobody could take a bath until Christmas Eve. The children fed it, watched it, and usually gave it a name, which made the next part harder.

Some families slipped a scale from the carp into their wallet for the new year, so there would be money. And more than one soft hearted family took the carp back to the river instead.

The custom is fading now, but a lot of Polish grown ups still remember the fish in the tub.

Before Christmas dinner, Polish families break a thin white wafer and hand pieces of it to each other.

It is called oplatek. It looks exactly like a communion wafer, because it is made the same way, from flour and water pressed in an iron.

Everyone at the table takes their own piece. Then each person goes round every other person, one at a time, breaks off a corner of theirs, and wishes them something for the year. It can take a long while at a big table, and it is usually where somebody cries.

Families with relatives abroad used to post a wafer inside a Christmas card so that the person far away could still take part.

In Polish American families this is often the very last thing left of the old country, still done every December by people who speak no Polish at all.

We named our newest Artisan pierogi after our favorite quarterback . Our "7teen" pierogi Is a MUST TRY ! It was created around the fact that Josh is a fan of chicken wings and cherry Pepsi. Our 7teen pierogi is fresh made dough stuffed with chicken breast, a cherry Pepsi reduction , a touch of jalapeno and ginger. The drive to Olcott is definitely worth it . We also have our Josh pierogi .
