This weekend we were honored to host Licenciado Miguel Álvarez Arévalo at Café Kacao. 🇬🇹

Licenciado Álvarez Arévalo is the Cronista de la Ciudad de Guatemala / the official Chronicler of Guatemala City. It is a lifetime appointment, granted by the Metropolitan Municipal Council in 1992, and it makes him the keeper of the capital’s memory: its streets, its churches, its processions, its people.

In 2013 he received the Orden Nacional del Patrimonio Cultural, the national decoration for cultural heritage. He directs Guatemala’s National Museum of History and has written more than thirty books about our country.

He has spent fifty years making sure Guatemala remembers itself. After the earthquake of 1976, while the capital was still in ruins, he went into the rubble with other historians and pulled out folkloric pieces by hand, saving parts of our culture that would have been lost with the debris.

To have him at our table, sharing our coffee and our food, was a moment we will not forget.
Gracias, Licenciado Álvarez Arévalo. 🇬🇹

For everyone who has been asking how you can help, here is one meaningful way. 🤍

We have partnered with Our Blood Institute | OBI to set up a patient credit account in honor of Mileena Black. Any donation made through this account goes toward OBI’s blood inventory in her name.

A few important things to know:
Your donation will not go directly to Mileena, all blood types and donation types are welcome and needed. When you arrive to donate, please let the staff know you are donating as a credit for Mileena Black so they can complete the Credit to Patient form.

Drop-ins welcome. Appointments encouraged - sign up link in our bio

Guatemalan Beef Stew ❤️

Latin American stews are a rich blend of Indigenous, Spanish, African, and Sephardic culinary traditions. When European colonizers arrived, they brought Iberian pots like the cocido and adafina, which merged with native crops like corn, squash, and root tubers, alongside African seasoning techniques.
