Today’s Slice of the Day is the CLARA LUPER. We named this pizza after Clara Luper because her courage helped change Oklahoma and our nation. In 1958, Clara Luper led the historic Oklahoma City sit-ins, years before many of the better known lunch counter protests across the South. Alongside 13 brave young people, including Eastside Pizza House owner Jabee Williams’ aunt, Gwen Mukes, she challenged segregation by peacefully sitting at a lunch counter where Black people were not allowed to eat. As a Black-owned business, we recognize that we stand on the shoulders of Clara Luper, Gwen Mukes, and the other sit-inners whose courage helped create opportunities for future generations of Black entrepreneurs, artists, and community leaders. Their actions remind us that progress is made when ordinary people take extraordinary risks for justice. Today, we honor their legacy with every Clara Luper slice we serve. If you’ve never visited the Clara Luper Sit-In Plaza in downtown Oklahoma City, we encourage you to stop by, learn the history, and reflect on the sacrifices that helped make our city and country better. We are grateful for Clara Luper, Gwen Mukes, and all 13 sit-inners, and we are proud to carry their legacy forward.
