Today is the feast day of St. Faustina, a young nun from Poland who was given a special mission from Jesus. She was tasked with spreading the message of God’s mercy. St. Faustina was asked by Jesus to have an image created of him. This image was to have both red and white rays of light coming from his sacred heart. From her diary note 77, “the pale ray stands for Water which makes souls righteous.” “The red ray stands for blood which is the life of the soul…..these two rays issued forth from the very depths of My tender mercy when my agonized heart was opened by a lance on the cross.”
On another occasion, JESUS told St Faustina: “My gaze from this image is like My gaze from the cross. … Mankind will not have peace until it turns with trust to My Mercy." (Diary note 299)

Wow! These words just pierce the soul. It is so difficult to comprehend the amount of love and mercy God desires to pour out upon us.

If we only sit still long enough to receive it……..

Today (October 4th) is the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi. He is the patron Saint of ecologists and many times depicted with animals and nature. He grew up in a life of luxury and was a rebellious teenager. St. Francis had a major conversion in his 20’s that led him to a life of extreme poverty. He wore rugged clothes, begged for his physical needs, preached the gospel. He was a charismatic speaker and drew thousands of people to listen to him; his followers became known as the Franciscan Friars. St. Francis worked to serve to sick and poor, lived with the animals, and was given the gift of the stigmata (wounds of Christ) that periodically would bleed.

The saints are extraordinary witnesses to the faith and their example guides us closer to Jesus. We each have our own journey. Trying to follow St. Francis may seem overwhelming and unattainable; but, as the mystical body of Christ we are called to share in the same ways that St. Francis lived his life. As the gospels tell us, we must strive for humility (Luke 14:11), detachment from material goods (Luke 12:15, Matthew 6:19-21), preach the gospel (Mark 16:15, Matthew 28:19-20), serve to care of the needy and sick (Matthew 10:7-8, Matthew 25:31-46).

Today’s featured Saint is the patron of pilots, astronauts, air travelers, the Air Force, test takers, and students.

St. Joseph of Cupertino lived in the 17th Century. He was a Franciscan priest who was given a unique grace of levitating while he prayed. He endured much scrutiny by other priests with this ability, but remained joyful, humble, and obedient to God’s will.

“Clearly, what God wants above all is our will which we received as a free gift from God in creation and possess as though our own. When a man trains himself to acts of virtue, it is with the help of grace from God from whom all good things come that he does this. September 13th

Eloquently speaking and preaching scripture might land you a nick name like Wonder Worker (St. Anthony of Padua) or honey-tongued (St. Ambrose) or for today’s saint he is known as golden-mouthed.

St. John Chrysostom was a priest who lived in Antioch and much to his distress was made a bishop in the greatest city of his time, Constantinople. His sermons were powerful and to the point. Preaching on charity, marital fidelity, justice, sharing your wealth with the poor. Unfortunately for St. John, his sermons and teachings caught the attention of the Empress who strongly disagreed with his teachings. She had him exiled in 404 and he died of natural causes in 407.

He is the patron saint of orators, preachers, speakers.

For his honesty and courage, he paid the price of a turbulent ministry as bishop, personal vilification, and exile.” -Franciscan Media’s reflection on St. John Chrysostom

✝️ It’s interesting to think about how a pastor’s sermon or homily or reflection of the gospel might bring one person comfort in their distress or uncertainty, and; for those same words spoken it might deeply pierce the heart of someone who thinks they are living life in comfort.

❤️‍🔥 Reflecting upon the past several days of gospel readings, Jesus teachings might either bring you comfort or might bring about a little tension. If His teachings rouse a little agitation in you then he’s trying to get your attention. Sit with the words of scripture that make you most uncomfortable, He wants to transform that part of your heart.

⛪️ In my opinion, the past several days of gospel readings have been a little tough; true happiness only being found in God (Luke 6), loving your enemies and not judging others (Luke 6), hypocrisy-don’t be a hypocrite! (Luke 6), living according to moral truth and upright living (Luke 6), and the big one today…. forgiveness and forgiving 77 times (Mathew 18).
