August 14th

Today’s Saint was a Franciscan friar and priest. He had a mission and was devoted to the conversion of sinners; all the way to his death when he volunteered his life for another in the N**i concentration camp. In the very middle of death, violence, division, and conflict he was able to be a light of Christ for all of those around him. Whether they were aware of it at the time, a seed of faith was planted in their hardened hearts.

August 10th

Some words of wisdom from one of my pastor’s homilies rings just as true for our lives today as with everyone’s lives who have come before us.

🔸We should live out the faith each day with eternal life with God on our mind.

🔸Faith transforms our journey to heaven.

🔸We often don’t see the results that come from our acts of faith.

The lives of the saints are all different. How they were raised, what country they’re from, what time period they were born in, how poor or wealthy they were, whether they died from an illness as a child or were martyred for the faith as an adult, and the list goes on and on with regard to their difference. The saints are the ones who truly understand the supreme virtue of the kingdom of heaven. Several things they have in common; they joyfully give up tangible items, strive to live virtuously, persevere in obedience, and they are courageous through persecution.

🔸They had God as their central focus

🔸The transformation of their lives developed from their unshakeable faith

🔸While on Earth, they didn’t get to see the fruits of their acts of faith.

Today’s Saint is a martyr for the faith. He was a deacon in the church and was entrusted with protecting and dispersing the wealth and goods of the church to the poor, orphaned, and widowed. St. Lawrence lived during the 3rd century, a time when Christianity was outlawed and a time of great persecution to those who continued to live their faith in God. On August 10th he was “grilled” alive on a grid iron. According to tradition after he had been in pain for a long time he made his famous cheerful remark, “It is well done. Turn me over!” He is the patron saint of deacons, chefs, firefighters, comedians, librarians, and seminarians.

Today is the feast day of Blessed Stanley Rother; priest, missionary, and martyr for the faith. As with all the Saints, they are the ones who truly understand the supreme value of the kingdom of heaven. We can look to their example of how to live out the faith joyfully, virtuously, courageously. The beauty of their witness leads us closer in our own relationship to the risen Lord.

One example of living out the faith we see in Blessed Rother’s life is the importance of striving for excellence in all tasks. While he was in Guatemala as a missionary, not only did he serve as a spiritual leader, he was a farmer, plumber, craftsman, and electrician. How many times a day do we complain about a task we are given? How often do we say to ourselves, this should be someone else’s job? Look to Blessed Rother’s example of accepting the task at hand and completing it to the best of your ability.

Another example of living out the faith is courageously discerning and following God’s calling for your life. Blessed Rother shows us that when you follow God’s plan, anything and everything is possible. Father Rother had major difficulties learning and passing his Latin class in seminary. But yet, during his time as a missionary, he was able to learn the language of the Guatemalan tribe and translate the New Testament into the Tz’utujil language.

For Blessed Rother, his missionary work was very dangerous. A civil war broke out during his time in Guatemala and the church (because of its influence) was caught in the middle. Sadly, it led him to be on a hit list of the Guatemalan government. On July 28th, 1981 he was martyred for the faith.

Just as he led the native tribe of Tz’utujil closer to Christ, Blessed Rother leads us closer to Christ by his courageous example in times of darkness. Let us pray for clarity and understanding in times of suffering and persecution.

July 22nd is the feast day of St. Mary Magdalene. Not much is known about her but a couple things we know for sure is from scripture.

She was a friend and follower of Jesus. Filled with sorrow over her sin, she anointed Christ, washed his feet with her hair. He exorcised seven demons from her. She was visited by the Risen Christ.

Today’s gospel reading tells of Mary Magdalene searching for Jesus at the empty tomb. Her love for him is so great that the thought of losing him has her slightly blinded to the fact that he’s actually right in front of her. It’s not until he says her name, that Mary Magdalene realizes she’s in his presence.

He is always in our presence. He always has open arms. He is always calling our name. Do we not hear him because we are so overcome with the weight of our anxieties and struggles? Do we not hear him because we are not searching?

A passage from Song of Songs that is paired with today’s gospel reading….”Let me rise then and go about the city, through the streets and squares; Let me seek him whom my soul loves. I sought him but did not find him. The watchmen found me, as they made their rounds in the city: “Him whom my soul loves—have you seen him?” Hardly had I left them when I found whom my soul loves…..”

July 14th

Known as Lily of the Mohawks, this Mohawk/Algonquin young lady had a deep desire to do what was pleasing to God even in the face of persecution from her family and community. Born in 1656 in what is now New York, she converted to the faith at 19 years old. Despite being treated as a slave and denied food on Sunday’s because she refused to work; she still saw the dignity of her people and witnessed to the love God has for us. St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the patron saint of Indigenous Americans, orphans, ecologists, people ridiculed for their piety.

~ Ora et Labora ~ ~ Pray and Work~

St. Benedict is the saint we celebrate today. He lived in the 6th century and was very influential in the monastic tradition. The Rule of St. Benedict includes liturgical prayer, study, manual labor, and living together in community. Both him and his twin sister, St. Scholastica had a deep love of God and a strong desire to live a life that put God first before all else. He is the founder of Benedictine monasteries and almost 1500 years later the rules he had taught are still much alive now as they were then.

St. Benedict is the patron saint of students, civil engineers, architects, farmers, against temptations, against witchcraft.

The history of how the Benedictine medal came about is uncertain. There are records from the 1400’s explaining the meaning of the letters displayed on the medal. The letters depicted on the medal stand for a Latin prayer of exorcism against the devil.

Verso l'alto! ~ To the Heights!

Athlete, mountain climber, jokester, average academic student. These are only some of the characteristics to describe the Saint feast day we celebrate today (July 4th). He also lead his friends on hiking trips that he turned into spiritual retreats, attended daily mass, lived a life of chastity, served the poor, promoted Eucharistic Adoration, wholeheartedly devoted his life to Christ. Only having lived to 24 years of age, St. Pier Giorgio Frassati left us with a full lifetime of inspiration to help us on our own path to holiness.

In 1901, Pier Giorgio was born into a wealthy and political influential Italian family. Dedicating his young life to serving the poor and sick, he unfortunately contracted polio which lead to his death. In 1981 his body was found to be incorrupt, beatified in 1990, and canonized a saint in 2025.

One of my favorite quotes from St. Catherine of Siena says it best.

“Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.”

This young Italian from the 20th century certainly did set the world on fire. With the countless numbers of friends he prayed with, to the poor he donated his own wealth to support, and to the multitudes of sick he cared for. St. Pier Giorgio Frassati shows us how to faithfully cooperate with God’s plan and accept the cross and sufferings with great joy and courage.
