Our longtime friend and cook, Derrick White, departed this world last Sunday night, the 28th of April.
While his family, our family, and his Satellite family are all still in shock, I cannot help but think of all that he meant to us.
Derrick worked with my family for 41 years. He drove every day from Accomack, VA., all season long, and when the Satellite went seven days, so did Derrick. His work ethic stretched far beyond his rigid schedule. He meticulously prepped, slow cooked our S.O.S. and our scrumptious Spanish sauce from scratch, and then cooked perfect eggs and omelets all day long. Derrick cooked eggs to order the old school way, not on the flat-top grill, but in a single frying pan, and that is truly a lost art.
He began teaching my two brothers everything about cooking breakfast when they were just teenagers. He taught my nephews just these past few years. Derrick and our mother had a deep and abiding friendship. Even after she retired, they called each other just to chat. Mom Audrey always remembered him on his birthday and Father’s Day. Derrick and I had nicknames for each other ~ I was grandma to his pop-pop. I will miss our lighthearted banter.
We will all miss him for so many reasons; his sense of humor, patience, kindness, and his work integrity all stand out, but I will miss his hugs most of all.
Please keep his family in your prayers. His mother, siblings, children, and extended family are all so brokenhearted.
R.I.P. Derrick, we will remember you with love and gratitude forever.
