We Are the United — We Will Never Forget 9/11

I was in 10th grade at a little‑known school in Alexandria, VA — T.C. Williams High School, the one from Remember the Titans. Just miles from the Pentagon, we felt a faint tremble under our feet when the plane hit. I remember walking up the stairwell to math class when a friend in baggy camo pants said, “We’re going to war.” I laughed it off — he was always a little out there — but the moment I stepped into class, everything changed.

The teacher and students were glued to the tube TV strapped to the old rolling cart. Normally, seeing that cart meant lights off and a good nap. But that day the lights stayed on, and the screen showed the World Trade Center burning. Then the feed switched to the Pentagon — smoke, chaos, fear. Some of my classmates cried, not knowing whether their parents who worked there were alive.

Later, my mom, Linda Kay Vetrano — now deceased — volunteered at Ground Zero in New York. They called her “the gal with the halo.” I still have her American‑flag hard hat, the one she wore while breathing in toxic smoke that I now know contributed to her decline. She was one of countless Americans who stepped forward without hesitation.

Nearly 3,000 people lost their lives. Over 17,000 were saved because first responders ran toward danger instead of away from it. Their courage, and the unity we felt after that day, still lives in me.

And I say this with conviction: we don’t need another 9/11 to be united. That day revealed the true American spirit — the do whatever it takes spirit — the determination to remain the greatest nation in the world.

God bless you all.
And I am damn proud to be American.
