It is with the deepest sorrow that we share the news that Tom Verdun passed away suddenly at his home in Evanston at the age of 72. Tom was the 4th of 17 children born in Pontiac, IL to Emma T. and Thomas A. Verdun, of Odell, IL. Tom was beloved by many and is survived by his partner of 38 years, Fe Fernandez, as well as 10 sisters, 6 brothers, 46 nieces and nephews and 65 great-nieces and nephews.
Tom earned a bachelor's degree in history from Illinois State University and a law degree from John Marshall Law School in Chicago, IL. He was a fierce advocate for restorative justice and a champion for the underserved. Over his 46-year career, he served with distinction as an Assistant Public Defender for the law office of the Cook County Public Defender, handling hundreds of cases, ranging from drug charges to murder charges. For over 15 years, Tom was a member of the Homicide Task Force and defended numerous clients on capital cases. After retiring from the Public Defender's office, Tom found his calling. He spent the last 20 years as the Director of Legal Services at the James B. Moran Center for Youth Advocacy tirelessly mentoring and defending the rights of Evanston youth. He was relentless in the pursuit of justice for countless individuals.
Everyone who crossed Tom's path felt his impact — through his work, his kindness, and his belief in others. His legacy is written not just in what he accomplished, but in the lives he lifted.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the James B. Moran Center for Youth Advocacy in Evanston, IL.
