Built in 1879–1881 as the Monarch Steam Mill by D. Hamill, this stone-and-brick building with its distinctive mansard roof was one of the finest flour mills in Kansas. In 1886 Bernhard Warkentin and partners purchased it, renaming it the Newton Milling & Elevator Company. Warkentin upgraded the mill with modern steel rollers to process Turkey Red hard winter wheat, helping make Kansas the “Breadbasket of the World” and producing the popular “Cream of Kansas” flour. The mill operated until 1964.

By the early 1970s the vacant building faced demolition when local manufacturer Lloyd Smith and his wife Jackie bought and restored it using the original blueprints. Today the historic Old Mill is home to Cadillac Jack’s Steakhouse. The building is owned by the “Mill Boys”, longtime Newton residents whose roots in the local food business and community stretch back nearly 50 years.

Welcome- introducing a new menu this week, in a place that has been part of Newton’s story for nearly 150 years.
