One of Newport's most meaningful summer gatherings is back. The fourth annual Newport Juneteenth celebration takes place this Saturday, June 20, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the parade grounds at Fort Adams State Park, presented by Rhode Island Slave History Medallions.
The day marks Juneteenth, which commemorates June 19, 1865, when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, finally learned they were free. This year it is tied to Rhode Island's 250th anniversary and expanded to honor the history of both Black and Indigenous people across the state.
It is a full day on the grounds: a reenactors' parade and musket salute at 11:30, a keynote by Secretary of State Gregg Amore and remarks by U.S. Senator Jack Reed, live music and dance, craft vendors, food trucks, and performances ranging from Narragansett drumming by the Thawn Harris family to a drum circle led by Sidy Maiga and a gospel set from RPM Voices of Rhode Island.
Free parking is available, and tickets are at rishm.org. Bring the kids and a folding chair and plan to stay a while.
