Pongal NYC: A Story of Love, Roots, and a Vegetarian Paradise
When Vandana first arrived in New York City, back in the early ‘90s, the city that never sleeps had very few places where vegetarians especially Jains could find soulful, sattvic food that was both healing and heartwarming. That gap? That’s where Pongal NYC was born.
In 1996, Pongal opened its doors with a simple mission: to serve food that’s light on the stomach, but heavy on culture, comfort, and care.
But this isn’t just a story of cuisine.
It’s a story of love. Vandana married a Tamilian, and in that union of cultures, Pongal found its identity: a South Indian restaurant rooted in vegetarian values, yet open to the vastness of tradition and innovation.
Over the years, Pongal NYC has become more than just a restaurant.
It’s a vegetarian paradise, where every meal is crafted to be gut-friendly, light, and affordable without ever compromising on taste or authenticity.
It’s a place where Jain friends, South Indian food lovers, homesick students, and wellness seekers all gather around the same table united by warmth, spice, and a spoonful of nostalgia.
Even the New York Times took notice, celebrating Pongal’s unique offering in the heart of Manhattan and cementing its place in the city’s vibrant culinary landscape.
As Vandana often says,
“Food should never weigh you down it should lift your spirit.”
Welcome to Pongal NYC.
Where every bite is a celebration of health, heritage, and home.
