A little-known story of September 11th lives in a cup of coffee.

In the days after the attacks, makeshift cafés appeared around Ground Zero, serving first responders, recovery workers and volunteers around the clock.

The Hard Hat Café, a small wooden canteen inside Ground Zero, served coffee and soup. The Green Tarp Café operated from a damaged Liberty Street storefront, its broken windows covered in green tarp. At St. Paul’s Chapel, volunteers poured hot coffee and served meals, while the Salvation Army ran canteens and refreshment stations throughout the recovery zone.

And just days before, 107 stories above Manhattan, coffee was being sipped at Windows on the World restaurant from its iconic blue-and-gold china, designed by Milton Glaser, the creator of I ❤️ NY.

25 years later, we remember the lives lost, those who answered the call, and the countless New Yorkers who showed up for one another in the days that followed. We love you 🙏🏼

Never Forget. 09.11.01 🇺🇸
