I’ve watched the documentaries.

But, I wasn’t there.

Growing up in Florida, I remember vividly when it happened and how the media & government turned on the Black people of New Orleans. I even studied it in college.

But, I wasn’t there.

Today, I pray for all the people’s lives who were forever touched by Katrina. The trauma that has been passed down through generations. The displacement that has occurred. The intrusion. The harm. The sadness. The disconnection.

If you were impacted by Katrina please know that I’ve sent up a prayer and lit a candle for you and your families today. May you always win, may you always find softness, and may your culture always be divinely protected.

In Solidarity,
Nicole

HISTORY MOMENT: The Garifuna & Hondurans in New Orleans rebuilt our city post-Katrina and continue to positively impact the culture of our city. The Garifuna people are an Afro-Latine & Indigenous community who have a rich culture AND are the largest Spanish speaking group in New Orleans. The Garifuna are originally from West Africa and escaped an enslaver’s ship in the Caribbean. From there they mixed and mingled with the Caribbean Indigenous peoples including the Arawaks & Caribs. Most of them settled in Roatan (an Island off of Honduras).
