We have always been drawn to small groups and secrecy. In the olde days, this was for our protection, careful conjuring to avoid persecution. 🌿 It would seem, under such circumstances, that much of our ritual would be lost, but instead, it thrived and it grew, handed down from generation to generation under a careful eye and trusted hand. We reaped sacred knowledge from our elders, learned ancient secrets on plants, herbs, and roots, and became learners of medicine, but because of our secrecy and because of the times, they called it “magic,” and it was forbidden. 🌿 Still, we thrived. When some of our elders traveled here on ships, they brought the olde world and the olde religion here. Hidden again, this time wrapped in skirts and disguised as simple plants. Immigrated and now “American,” we adapted, we learned, but again, in tight circles and behind closed doors. The women that came before us shared this revered wisdom with us, knowing we would be the keepers of this text, that we, the granddaughters that were not snuffed out, would be the bridge between the olde world and this new one. 🌿 There are not words to accurately articulate what a gift this is, aside from maybe comparing it to religious text. It is a beautiful, but pressing idea to know that we are all that stands between the survival of this knowledge versus it being lost. 🌿 Again, we conjure in small groups and secrecy for our protection, but this time, from a slightly different enemy. We still soothe, we heal, we restore, with the dark awareness that if this enemy wins, if it finds our elders and takes them out, we are hopelessly lost. Theirs is too great a gift to lose, and it has not been fully shared yet. We are still learning. We are not ready. 🌿 So we press on. We learn. We formulate. We study. We share what we do know with you, so that our efforts and our long History as healers does not dim. It is an immense privilege to fill those shoes that have come so far and seen so much. 🌿 But not like this. Please pray with us, cast light with us, and send healing and protective energy to all of our stregas, brujas, santeras, and crones that are our greatest resources for continuing this craft.
