Cool story about our predecessors.

Nothing like an old-school ethnic deli! Here is Frankie’s Deli that was located at 1037 River Road, New Milford. Many people knew this place as the “Smelly Deli,” because of the aromatic cheese hanging in the store. As a matter of fact, there seems to be every type of meat and cheese hanging in the store. Technically the sign outside said “Frankie’s Imported Delicacies.” And in the newspaper advertisements, where this photo ran, the store was called “Frankie’s Imports.” Any way you slice it – this store was known for great food! I will let you guess which one of the two men pictured is Frankie.

The location of Frankie’s was in what was called the New Milford Shopping Center, which by the way opened on February 15, 1951. (Yes, that would be 75 years ago tomorrow!) When the shopping center opened there was an anchor store called the Quality Market. This small grocery store had a meat and deli department, and the man behind the counter was Frankie. A couple of doors down was Mallard’s Delicatessen. Before 1973, when Mallard’s went out of business, Frankie took over that deli. But first, he went to Italy where he found his bride and brought her back. She would help out at the deli by making fresh pasta dishes.

Frankie could make you a hero from 1 foot to 8 feet long! And the list of what he had in the store was endless. He was famous for his Auricchio provolone-prosciutto, mortadella, and ricotta salata. The mozzarella and ricotta were home-made, as was the pork sausage, sopressata, cacciatori, salami, and salads. There was also a large assortment of imported cheeses. Note the hand written sign on the door reminding you that they had hot coffee. And one could also get an Italian espresso. And for your sweet tooth Frankie had Perugina candies and torrone. Frankie’s Deli closed and a place called Bambino’s Deli opened there. To honor the classic place of old, they have a “Frankie’s Italian Combo” to honor the “Smelly Deli.” – (text credit): Tim Adriance
