Alright, coffee goblins, letâs talk about the Starbucks ice controversy.
Everyone is losing their minds over how much ice is in their cup versus how much coffee is in it. So hereâs a little insight from a coffee shop owner and master barista.
The video shows the same latte made three ways: No Ice. Light Ice. Standard.
What nobody seems to notice is this:
Every single cup contains the exact same amount of espresso. Two shots. Thatâs it. That never changed.
The real argument isnât about getting less coffee.
Itâs about dilution.
đNo Ice:
Youâre basically getting espresso and a mountain of milk. Fill that cup to the top and the espresso starts disappearing into the dairy abyss. Congratulations, youâve ordered coffee-flavored milk.
đLight Ice:
A middle ground for most people. Less ice means more milk, which means the espresso isnât quite as bold. Still good. Still drinkable. We just make sure youâre okay with the flavor shift before handing it over.
đStandard:
The one everyone loves to hate. Yes, it looks like a ridiculous amount of ice. Thatâs because the ice is part of the recipe. It controls dilution and keeps the milk-to-espresso ratio where it was designed to be. The result? A balanced latte where the espresso can actually be able to taste with your soul.
At the end of the day, youâre not getting robbed of espresso.
Youâre choosing how much you want the milk and ice to bully it.
Just my take from behind the espresso machine. Carry on, internet.
