A PIECE OF IRISH & SPORTING HISTORY — RIGHT HERE AT McNAMARA’S

In July 1972, Muhammad Ali — “The Greatest” — arrived in Dublin for his legendary fight against Al “Blue” Lewis at Croke Park.

As Ali stepped into the frenzy at Dublin Airport, he was presented with an oversized traditional Irish shillelagh. Photographs from that historic arrival show Ali proudly brandishing the shillelagh for the Irish press.

Eight days later, on July 19, 1972, Ali stepped into the ring at Croke Park and defeated Al “Blue” Lewis in the 11th round.

More than half a century later, that piece of history has a home in Nashville.

The historic shillelagh presented to Muhammad Ali upon his arrival in Ireland is proudly and given to us by a generous patron is displayed above the fireplace mantle at McNamara’s Irish Pub.

Next time you’re in, take a look above the fireplace and see a remarkable connection between Ireland, Muhammad Ali and one of the most memorable sporting events in Irish history.

Corcreechy - an original song written by Sean Turk McNamara. Following Dermot Lyons as he returns to his childhood home in Corcreechy, County Down more than sixty years after emigrating to Liverpool. Traveling the roads and fields of his youth, Dermot revisits memories of family, rural life, and a home once filled with familiar voices.
Now, with those he loved gone, Dermot is the last one left to remember—and to tell the story of how it used to be.
Corcreechy is a poignant song about home, family, emigration, and the bittersweet weight of remembrance.
Now Dermot stands as the last keeper of those memories, carrying within him the voices of the departed and the story of a world that has faded but not disappeared.
