Early voting starts today, and I want to share some thoughts on the District 60 race from the perspective of someone who spends his days trying to bring resources home to this community.
The legislature already has a Republican supermajority, so this seat won't change the balance of power either way. This vote is about what our community gets back from the state โ things we've paid taxes for and should receive.
I know a lot of people in this district support Shaundelle Brooks, and I understand why. She carries a story that matters to a lot of families, and her commitment to her cause is real. I'm not disputing any of that.
As your council member, over the past two years I often need state agencies' help, and I haven't seen the kind of presence and results that bring resources back to our district. Old Hickory Boulevard and Donelson Pike are state routes, and TDOT money flows through the local rep's relationships. Parts of our district flood regularly, and state disaster and infrastructure dollars are competitive. Senior property tax relief exists at the state level, and a rep with stronger relationships in Nashville may be able to expand it for our seniors. Community grants for parks, youth programs, and neighborhood improvements tend to go to districts that stay visible at the state level.
Eva Romero has been out in the district listening to residents. She started a property tax petition that made a lot of news around here, and she's talking about a two percent cap and a freeze for seniors. In a legislature like ours, that kind of agenda has a real shot at moving โ and that's the difference between a vote that makes a point and a vote that brings something home.
So when you vote, I'm not asking you to pick a party. I'm just asking you to think about what our district deserves going forward.
Early voting runs through October 29th. Election Day is November 3rd.
