The Bay de Noquet Lumber Company cut its last log at Nahma on July 26, 1951. It had been sawing there since 1881, and it owned the town. Not most of it. All of it.

So it put Nahma up for sale. Ads ran across the country asking $250,000 for a community of about 750 people, with one condition: whoever bought it had to create jobs. Life magazine ran the story under the headline "Sold-One Town."

An Indiana playground equipment company bought it and planned a resort. It managed to employ about a third of the residents. Nahma is still there, on Big Bay de Noc. The Nahma Inn, built in 1909 for company workers, still operates, and locomotive No. 5 of the company railroad sits under a shelter in town.
