Staying small is the key to Deep Canyon Coffee. I’m not gonna sit here and try to convince you it’s the best. But it could be your favorite. My customers keep coming back for more and they are the greatest people on earth. If you haven’t tried it, I really think you should. Go to the link in my bio or www.deepcanyoncoffee.com to order.

A couple years ago I made a mistake and left a Basecamp Blend batch in the roaster too long. After some adjustments it created one of my favorite coffees I’ve ever had. It’s absolutely delicious and any bold coffee lover can sip on this for hours. This is not like other dark roast coffee.

Time for some coffee talk. Testing coffees is a big part of developing my little company. Sometimes it’s rewarding and sometimes it’s just outright disappointing. This time I listened to the light roast crowd and tested some highly rated coffees. Average Arabica coffees land in the 80-86 point rating out of a 100 point scale. These I tested were in the low 90 point region and more rare and expensive. Recommended on the lighter side of the roast to exhibit the flavor profile, light roasts are a tad more specialized than I prefer but I’ll make an effort to provide what people are asking for. I listen and respond. I roasted 3 batches of each to varying degrees and produced very good results but in the end I can’t ignore the lack of satisfaction. I tasted a few different ways as well. Each exhibited a range of tasting notes and I could go into a pretentious description in detail but ultimately I found them to be unpleasant. Notes were too peaked. Different in the nature of heightened tasting notes but not necessarily better. I roasted one of the coffees to a full city medium to expose a little sweetness and it got more to my liking, but that wasn’t supposed to be the goal. It’s a waste of time if the result isn’t as satisfying overall. I also roasted a blend of my own using my regular inventory to a light finish and though less aromatic it tasted on par with the fancier two. The notes were a little more subtle but overall a better experience and far more forgiving on the preparation end. As many times as I’ve tried light roasted coffee from various roasters and among friends I’ve never actually liked it. I prefer a smooth and rich coffee with a touch of natural sweetness so I think I’ll stick to that for a while. Deep Canyon Coffee is smooth and satisfying and definitely not light roast. I encourage everyone to drink their coffee the way they like it. Just don’t be one of those people who says your preference is the right way or best way. And don’t pretend to like something just because someone told you it’s somehow supposed to be better.

What’s your adventure? I’ve been out on trails most of the year and occasionally I remember to take some pictures. When I go out I tend to avoid the noise of popular places and find where nobody told me about. Go grab some coffee, hopefully some Deep Canyon, load your gear, and follow your map to somewhere beautiful.

There’s a trend going around where big industrial companies are making it easy to brand a coffee to call your own. That’s coffee without identity. It’s the same coffee over and over in a new package being sold by people who don’t care about the product. When you buy from me or other actual coffee roasters you’re getting a better, fresher, genuinely unique coffee that carries an identity and a backstory. Go to my website in my bio and check things out or support your favorite roaster. Buy small and kick the corporate establishment in the teeth. Small businesses do it better.
